Manual Restore for XP/2000/NT
Emergency Restore Instructions
Just in case WinRescue cannot restore Windows, here are instructions on how to do it yourself in another operating system, like, Win95, Win98, or DOS. The only other option is to restore using the WinXP/2000/NT CD.
How to Restore the Registry in another Operating System
To Get Into DOS or another Windows
·If WinXP/2000/NT is installed on a NTFS partition (not FAT) there are only a few ways to restore from another operating system. You can use the WinXP/2000/NT CD or Recovery Console (if you have previously installed it). Or you may use the DOS Boot Disk that WinRescue creates if you start with a boot disk made by NTFSDOS Pro. NTFSDOS Pro costs about $300 and is offered by another company. It is the only way that I know of into an NTFS drive outside of Windows.
·If you already had another operating system set up when you installed this version of WinXP/2000/NT, there should be an entry for it at the beginning menu. If this is the case, select that entry.
· If you made a boot disk with an entry for DOS, use the boot disk and select that entry.
·If another operating system is not installed on your computer or you do not have an entry for it in the beginning menu, you can start up the computer with a boot diskette from DOS or Win95 in the diskette drive. This will get you into DOS.
Finding Backup Registry Files
·WinRescue keeps backups of the registry files in a zip file called, registry.daz. This may be found in the WinRescue backup directories or in the Windows directory. These files will need to be unzipped with a zip program like WinZip.
·WinXP/2000/NT keeps a set of backup registry files in the Windows\Repair directory. These are produced when WinXP/2000/NT is installed.
·WinXP/2000/NT and WinRescue's XP/2000/NT Boot Disk also keeps a set of backup registry files in the Windows\Repair\RegBack directory. These may be quite old depending on the last time an XP/2000/NT Boot Disk or ERD was done.
Restoring the Registry Files
·The Registry Files are located in the Windows\System32\Config directory. The following files need to be copied to this directory: sam, security, system, software, and default.
·The User's Registry File (ntuser.dat) is located in his user directory (Documents and Settings\{user's name}). The ntuser.dat file must be copied to this directory.
·If WinXP/2000/NT is running, you will not be able to copy these files. This has to be done outside of WinXP/2000/NT and when WinXP/2000/NT is not running. Only WinRescue can restore these files when WinXP/2000/NT is running.
