Why are some boards locked?
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1195393211/
- Laverne - I wanted to post a reply to the question at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1171201673/ but there was NO reply option -- and it was marked Locked Board, even though I was logged on. I don't understand this. Please explain what this means.
- Ray - There are two general parts to this discussion board. One is the Your Input section (which this area is in) and the other is the Answers section. The Answers section is locked and cannot have replies posted to it.
All posts start in here in the Questions section (which is in the Your Input part and so they can be answered) and only after at least 6 months of no activity are they put in the Answers section.
If you want to provide answers to a question, please look in this section regularly for questions that you can answer. If you receive our newsletter, it lists the most recent questions in this section. Once a question has been answered and it has seen no activity for at least 6 months, it is locked and moved to the Answers section.
Removing Software that does not have Uninstall
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1195603690/
- Mike - Here in Australia many people took advantage of the AOL Anti-virus programme. Now that it is no longer functioning how do you remove it from the computer when the programme does not have the AOL uninstall feature included? Going to Control Panel - remove programme does not work! Nor does trying to remove it from Program Files. I will never use any AOL programmes again!!
- Ray - Here are instructions for removing any programs that do not have an uninstall link:
First, find where the program is located on the harddrive. Using Search (click on Start and then select Search) may help you with this. It would help if you know the name of one of the files it uses (if there is a link that you use to start the program try right clicking on it and finding what file or directory it is linked to then search for that).
When you find where the program is located, open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and select Explore from the popup list), find the directory, figure out if the whole directory is for that program only and that it is indeed for that program. If it is, delete it (or if you want to be safe, rename the directory name to a different name, later you can come back and delete it if it does not cause any problems for you).
Next, run RegVac (http://superwin.com/regvac.htm), go to the Expert Zone to Tools and then to Software Cleanup. Follow the directions there on all three tabs.
Find any links in Start, on the Desktop, and in msconfig (go to Start, Run, and type msconfig) and delete them.
That should take care of it.
Operating two Windows on same computer
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1195666689/
- rashley3 - I am currently running Vista 64 bit on my machine. I would also like to run Win Xp on the same machine using a separate hard drive. Is this possible and how would I switch between OS?
- dlwolff0 - See this article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555852/en-us
moving information from one computer to another
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1196117327/
- texaskid85 - I was wondering is there a way to move a program with all the information it has from one computer to another if youre running a network?
- Ray - No, (except for rare cases) you cannot move whole programs over because they have settings in the registry of the old computer that are needed to run. Only the programmers of that program know where they have put all of the settings in the registry and all of the files that that program needs to run.
Your best bet is to install the program on the other computer and then copy over any other data files that you need.
back to the last web page disabled
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1196195653/
- billrobb - why does the green arrow on the upper left of my screen, to go back to the last web page go grey, not allowing me to go back to the last page
- Ray - My guess would be that another window or tab was opened when you went to that webpage and so it cannot go back. Try looking on other tabs or other browser windwos to see if one of them has the previous page.
WinRescue XP with BART PE?
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1196424756/
- Cassandra - I want to use Winrescue XP to rescue an unbootable Windows on a laptop which doesn't have a floppy drive. I decided that a way to do this would be to boot into BART PE and then run Winrescue from my hard disk. Will this work? Will Winrescue know that it's supposed to restore the registry to the dead Windows on my hard disk, and not the registry in BART PE's RAMdisk?
I know that Roy also sells some gadget to use Winrescue with BART PE, but I don't want to spend an extra $15 for something which I can easily do myself, if I can avoid it.
- Ray - No, WinRescue will not work with BartPE because it will think that BartPE's registry is the one to restore to. There is a DOS version of WinRescue XP which comes with WinRescue XP (look in the WinRescue XP directory) that may work, but it does not work seemlessly with BartPE.
Another option is to unzip the registry backup and place the files in the C:\Windows\System32\Config directory (actually the user.ini file in the backup tells where the registry files go, not all of them go in the Config directory), but that is all you have to do to restore the registry.
XP Recovery CD Maker (http://www.xp-recovery-cd.com/) which uses BartPE has a specially written version of WinRescue which works with BartPE.
Computer processor incorrect
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1196280929/
- porteno2 - I have windows xp pro. and a 400 mhz Intel processor but for some strange reason the system folder and the setup (before boot) shows 200 mhz???? Intel celeron? ( I know for a fact that it is straight Intel 400 Mhz because I installed it myself). I tried to manipulated it on the setup page with no success! Any sugestions?
- dlwolff0 - Go to the Intel website, they have a utility you can download that will tell you the speed of your processor.
Also have a look at this knowledge base article, apparently reporting the correct processor speed can be a problem in WinXP. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316965&Product=winxp
Re-installing windows
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1197303162/
- algasys - Is it possible to re-install windows xp over an existant windows partition without losing some user files?
- Ray - Yes. As long as it is the same version of Windows. So installing Windows XP over an existent Windows XP will work, just make sure that you install the new Windows XP to the same directory as the old one.
Alt, Ctrl, Delete brings up Processes
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1189687320/
- nutman2 - i have a large problem , to me anyway ,need help alt cntrl delete when pressed comes up with page that says processes and very hard to get rid of , i need three finger salute badly , can anyone help?
- Ray - The page that says Processes is the page that you want. It is just on the wrong tab. Look near the top of the page and you will see other tabs. Processes is one of the tabs. Find the Application tab and click on it and you will be back where you want to be.
If you close the page with the Applications tab selected, it will open up next time when you press Alt, Ctrl, Delete with Applications showing. It remembers the last tab that was showing and opens that way. That is what confused you.
- nutman2 - i for some reason have no task manager file. ctrl alt delete brings up process
page that is all. nothing clicked will do anything other than say some changes wiil affect running of computer. am not computer literate sorry for that
- crensw - not sure if I'm understanding your problem correctly or not but I had lost all the tabs on my ctrl alt delete also and finnialy clicked on the outer edge and it brought the tabs back
- Ray - In addition to crensw's answer, if the tabs are not showing, you can press the Tab key and cycle through the items. After it selects the buttons at the bottom, it goes to the tabs. When it is on the tabs, you can press the arrow buttons (the left arrow key and the right arrow key) to go to different tabs. Processes is one of the tabs. You want the Applications tab which is right before (or to the left of) the Processes tab.
changing partition size
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176551091/
- hamza - i wanted to increase the size of my partition where windows is installed , i have got this partition which is empty so wanted to sort of merge it with C drive. Is it possible to do so without actually formatting the whole hard disk.
- dlwolff0 - You can increase the partition size by using programs such as Partition Magic [Symantec], Partition Commander [VCOM], or Disk Director [Acronis].
You can also increase the partition size using Windows Disk Management [under Administrative Tools in the control panel], but if I am reading the help files correctly you will have to change the volume [C:] to dynamic instead of basic.
- fnlvn2 - I have multiple partitions on 2 200G hard drives. I found that the simplest and safest way to add partitions and/or change their size was to use a program called Partition Magic. I've used the program for years without loss of data.
- quinland - I second the recommendation of Partition Magic. I have used it with only one problem I caused myself by leaving a small area outside of all partitions. It was easy to fix.
- Ray - Before you change the partitions, always make a backup. You never know what will happen. I have heard of Partition Magic messing up and losing all of the data, so be sure to backup.
We have WinRescue (http://superwin.com/rescuexp.htm) which backs up files and the registry, but backing up the entire image would be better using an image backup program like, DriveImage XML or Norton Ghost.
- onemaddude - I too have used Partition magic for years with no problems or loss of information but, as Ray suggested, back-up first. With computers, anything can happen and usually does eventually.
Memory upgrade
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1195934360/
- alanturk - I have been thinking about adding more memory to my PC for some time. I have done a scan to check what is suitable, and find I have just 512MB for my XP Home system, with 3 empty slots. Suggested upgrades are 512MB in two of those slots to bring me up to 1.5GB, or 1GB in all three empty slots, to bring me up to 3.5GB. That all seems clear enough, but then I am told I should use matched pairs. My current 512MB doesn't look like a matched pair, as it occupies only one slot. The proposed two 512MBs I suppose would be a matched pair, but the three 1GBs don't look like pairs at all, let alone matched ones!. Can someone please explain to me what I need to do?
- golferjack - Just go to the following link http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx They indicate you don't need matches.
- Snakeyes - Many systems require matched sticks. Even if your system does not one suggestion is to buy the best memory that your system can use even if it cannot exploit its full capability. This way you can hopefully reuse this memory if you upgrade your system in the near future. Even if you choose memory thats ideal for your existing system keep in mind that memory problems are difficult to identify and better quality memory is always a good idea.
- alanturk - Thank you for suggestions and sorry to have been a long time coming back to you. I tried the link from golferjack and ran the diagnostic, which definitely tells me "Your system requires that you install memory in pairs." I agree with Snakeyes about using good quality memory. I didn't get much help from online retailers, so I'll explore some local shops and find out what they suggest.
- Snakeyes - Try Newegg.com. They are a very reliable and well priced online store.
Disabling Java and JavaScript
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1200082269/
- billrobb - IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT TO PROTECT MY PC I DISABLE JAVA SCRIPT. WHAT IS IT AND HOW WOULD I DO IT.
- Ray - If you could disable JavaScript, I doubt that it would help in any way to protect your computer.
There is Java and there is JavaScript. Java is much more "dangerous" than JavaScript because it can do much more, but I still would not recommend disabling either one.
Java is a programming language that is used to write many programs on the internet. Games and videos on the internet use Java. To disable it, you should uninstall the Java items in Add/Remove Programs. If you do that, you will find that many things on the internet will not work for you and I would think that you would receive a lot of errors while on the internet.
JavaScript is a language for scripts embedded in webpages that do little things like add up numbers, change an image when your mouse is over it, etc. I do not know how JavaScript can be disabled.
- billrobb - thanks so much for taking the time to answer some of my questions!
Windows XP Help File
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1198417379/
- wngardner - When I key the Windows logo & F1, I get the messege "cannot find Helpctr.exe" where can I get this file and where do I put it.
- Snakeyes - Start>Run>Type in:cmd.exe>ok
In the command prompt window just copy and paste the following command followed by pressing the ENTER key:-
REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\HELPCTR.EXE" /VE /T REG_SZ /D "C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe" /F
- wngardner - Thanks much -- worked flawlessly.
Evaluation of Uniblue RegistryBooster2
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1199850683/
- Ray - One of our users asked me to evaluate Uniblue Registry Booster.
Here is what I found:
Some of the problems/errors in Uniblue were valid. The latest version of RegVac Registry Cleaner (http://www.superwin.com/regvac.htm) finds all of these problems/errors that Uniblue finds but RegVac exceeds Uniblue in that it also finds thousands more and it is less expensive.
Add to this that many of Uniblue's results were not correct, like Empty Keys that were not empty, Missing and Invalid Paths that were not missing or invalid, and Invalid Shortcuts. Shortcuts are not a part of the registry and cleaning them should not be the task of a registry cleaner but it is a dishonest way to come up with more results than true registry cleaners. I found 93 problems/errors listed in Uniblue Registry Booster that really were really not problems or errors (your results may vary depending on the size and entries in your registry).
If I had let Uniblue clean the "problems and errors" that it found, it would have disabled many of my programs. Watch out for this potentially dangerous program.
- Bavarian29 - I used Uniblue and have asked for a refund that was never honored. My experience was a disastrous result when using the Privascy part of the Unilblue System. It deleted a bunch of short cuts and the All Programs item on the Start box showed EMPTY. This made my system totally non-usable. A call to support provided no solution. The fix to restore to a previous machine state was also disabled! After some review of possible actions to restore my system, I decided to start WIN XP in the safe mode. This allowed me to get back to normal. Be aware! Stay away from this program.
A good Clipboard utility
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1200194454/
- Mister Ed - I have been using a clipboard utility called Reclip (lockettefamily.com) for years, The last upgrade, 2002, has a couple bugs that cause me some grief. The utility is easy to use and meets my needs, but it appears to have become abandonware. I have contacted the author, but he doesn't seem to interested in working on it. >
QUESTION: What are some recommendations for a good, easy to use clipboard utility. Freeware is great, but Shareware is ok as long as it is not too expensive, and has a hx of recent updates. I am especially looking for one that will allow me to copy and drag between text clip windows.
- Bavarian29 - i have used a program called Clip Trakker which does an excellent job. Many features and flawless performance make me recommend it. A Google search should steer you to the home page.
- Mister Ed - Hey, thanks for the tip. I looked at it and it seems to be the kind of thing I'm looking for. I downloaded the eval version, and I am going to see what it can do.
