A-1 Cleaner Update

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1180276557/

  • Carol - When trying to update A-1, I got this error message: "DeleteFile failed; code 5 Access is denied" So, I re-tried it, got the same message. I have been able to update successfully before.
  • Ray - You are getting that error because A1Click is running. The update is trying to replace the A1Click file but it can't because it is running. Please close A1Click before finishing the installation process and you will not get that error.
  • Carol - Hi.. I closed A1Click, as you suggested, before I downloaded the update. It worked perfectly. Thank you!

control alt delete processes

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1180439451/

  • billrobb - you state to press control alt delete and go to processes: "Processes connected to running applications or Windows processes should not be closed down, but viruses and spyware should be closed." How can you recognize spyware and viruses? What does this long list represent?
  • rrraminez - the long list of Processes represent code that is running on your computer. All of the Applications have their own processes. Windows and other programs (running in the background) run processes too.
Distinguishing what each process is related to and whether they are viruses or not is not an easy task. There are websites, like http://www.tasklist.org, which list the processes and tell you what they are.
Another way to find out what they are is to close them one by one. You should do this when no programs are running and when it will not matter if Windows crashes because closing some of them will crash Windows (closing them will not affect Windows when it restarts).

wireless router

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1180542946/

  • wallygrove - I use the Cingular wireless modem card and have read about having a wireless router to help increase download and surfing speed. Is the router used in addition to my wireless card or as a replacement?
  • Ray - I am not familiar with the Cingular wireless modem card, but I do know what a router is.
A router is like a hub. It is used to connect two or more computers together. The router cannot replace the modem and so it would be in addition to the wireless card.
The modem connects you to the internet. Without it you will not be able to connect to the internet. The modem can be connected directly to your computer or it can connect into a router or hub to which one or more computers are connected.
The difference between a hub and a router is that a hub is transparent and just distributes the signal to the connected computers. A signal coming in from the internet does not see the hub but instead sees the computers hooked up to it.
A router on the other hand puts up a wall between the internet and connected computers. A signal coming in from the internet only sees the router (to the internet it looks to be a computer). The router then distributes the signal to the computers attached to it.
If you want to connect several computers to one internet account, you should use a router, so that the internet company will only see the one router (this is allowable by internet companies). If instead you connect them through a hub or disconnect one and connect the other computer directly to the modem, the internet company will only recognize the one computer that is first set up with it. It will not recognize the other computers unless you get separate accounts for them or have the internet company reset the account to the other computer (in which case, it will not recognize the first computer).
The university where my daugher attends requires all students hooked up to their network to use hubs and not routers because they want to be able to detect (and charge) everyone who is on the network.
A router can provide added protection because anyone trying to hack into your computer from the internet will have to hack through the router first (you should change the password in your router from the default password to make it harder on hackers). For this reason even though a router is not needed to hook up one computer to your wireless modem, using a router will provide added security.
  • wallygrove - Thanks Ray. My question is answered.

Ctrl Alt Del Doesn't Work

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1181309062/

  • Edmurnan - I have windows xp pro. Up until about two weeks ago if I was in Firefox and the computer locked I would hit cntl alt del and the END TASK menu would come up Problem solved. Now Crtl alt del has no effect on computer. Nothing comes up. Even if I am not locked up. Why is this. I downloaded an firefox update around that time. Could that be the problem and how do I reslove.
  • dlwolff0 - Windows task manager failing to open is one symptom of virus infection. Does your antivirus program still operate? If so, run a full computer scan. Check this knowledge base article for tips. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129972/en-us I doubt the FireFox update caused this. If it had there would be an epidemic of complaints. I installed the update and Windows task manager still works on my computer.

Safely removing Jump Drive

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1182036695/

  • yosemite5156 - When I plug in my jump drive I use to get an icon I could click on to safely remove my jump drive. Now I can still access the data on my jump drive I just don't get the Icon I can click on to safely remove it.
  • quinland - I had a similar problem, which Ray helped me to tackle. The icon for SafelyRemove disappeared. Three methods:
            a) Go to MyComputer, and right-click the icon for your jump drive, select eject. The drive can be safely removed.
            b) Go to the run option on Start, and type in Systray.exe. The USB and speaker icons appear when I do this. Shut down your USB normally.
            c) Edit your Start options in Windows. Add Systray.exe.
If you are Win982e, re-install your USB files from one of the disks that come with USB drives.
  • yosemite5156 - Thanks works great. 5 stars to you.

Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1181761972/

  • aries - I can not get the hang of this computer stuff it gets so fusterating now i have a thing that says....Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger could someone please help me cant get rid of it
  • Ray - It came with Windows. I always just lived with it.
  • TCHAPAIEV - YesDr watson Postmortem is included in Windows XP (both home and pro!!!) ; yes it says "Postmortem"and is very frignhtening ; usually when this occurs it lets your PC freeze and you have to restart it manually ; no idea of what can cause this to happen but for sure it is a detection of a windows service not functionning in the normal way ; a conflict between apps or something else ; the only very peace keeping thing that I can add, is that while you have generally to restart your PC manually , there is no other consequences ; probably one may access to more information by calling Administration tools and events (System) : there the list of errors are given and sometimes you get more valuable information from Microsoft abot the cause of the errors
  • Ray - If you want to know more about Dr. Watson (including how to disable it), go to Help and Support in Windows and do a search for "dr. watson postmortem". That should find 5 Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.

Jumping cursor

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1181483794/

  • briadeaten - I have a most unusual and annoying problem with my Dell Latitude D800 laptop Windows XP Professional SP2. When I am typing from the keyboard, suddenly the cursor has jumped to another area and I find myself inserting the words in another area of the message. I disabled my touch pad in case that was the problem, but it still persists. The problem occurs in every app. that I use. Can anybody help?
  • Ray - I would think that it is you inadvertently touching the touch pad, but you have disabled it.
That could also happen if you press the Tab button. Tab moves the cursor to the next textbox.
And it can happen in the browser if you start typing in any other textbox than the first one and the page is not fully loaded. When the page is fully loaded, the cursor is put in the first or default textbox.
Other than that, I don't know of the cursor moving itself. Maybe someone else has some ideas.
  • nvogen - I noted your message on my "mouse jumps" post. I have had this problem but I always put it down to my hitting the wrong key.
  • briadeaten - Did your problem ever get resolved?
  • nvogen - Not yet.
  • rfmizell - I have the same problem. I can tell you things that have not worked. My mousiss a Logitech wireless that feeds through a USB plug-in recvr/xmitter. I have tried repositioning the USB plug to all 4 possible placed. I hjave downloiaded and re-installed the driver software. I have tried moving the mouse where it is directly over the USB and is physically within 2 feet of same. I've tried non-rechargable datteries and nothing I have done has cured the problem. When I use the standard wired mouse it hjas always worked. I would like the answer if someone figures out what causes this.
  • fjbjr - I had the same problem with the cursor. It was suggested that it may be the wireless mouse. I replaced the mouse and the problem was resolvrd.
  • briadeaten - I will try your approach and let you know if it has the same result. Sounds like a good solution.
  • Ray - My wireless started giving me problems too. The cursor didn't jump but it would occasionally double click when I only clicked once. I have replaced it with a wired mouse. I guess when these wireless mice get old, they start acting up.

keyboard shortcut for Back/Forward

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1182815588/

  • billrobb - I searched for keyboard shortcuts which I know is here somewhere, especially while surfing but ccouldn't find it. Can someone tell me how to easily go back/forward a page using the keyboard.
  • Ray - One way is to hold down on the Alt key and use the arrow keys.
Alt and the Left Arrow key will go back.
Alt and the Right Arrow key will go forward.

Many defective Class registry entries

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1182918195/

  • haroldzed - I just purchased the RegVac program and experimented with the Classes Vac. It found over 1,600 bad entries! Can this be correct? I have been using the computer for 3+ years and have used CCleaner and Easy Cleaner regularly. 1,600??? Maybe I just need some comfort.
  • Ray - Yes, that sounds normal for a first cleaning by RegVac. If you have Vista, it can be even higher than that. RegVac does a much more in depth cleaning then other registry cleaners. You can find information for RegVac Registry Cleaner and download it from http://superwin.com/regvac.htm - Registry Cleaner.
  • onemaddude - I have been using Reg Vac and A-1 Cleaner for several years now and what you see is nothing. I do tons of downloading, unzipping, creating and moving files around so, the first time I used A-1 Cleaner, I almost had a heart attack when it found over 10.000 errors. LOL Just relax and enjoy.

Unknown disc activity

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1182110537/

  • musen - Sometimes, for some unknown reason, my HD light comes on indicating the HD is doing some thing. I can hear the HD reading and/or writing. I have nothing scheduled to run, no updates are down-loading (that I know of) so I always wonder, "What the heck is this thing doing?". Can anyone tell how I can determine what is going on"
  • quinland - There are a number of possibilities, but a frequent one is the use of an indexer, either Windows or one of the other indexing programs, e.g., Google. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del the Task Manager will pop up. Look in the processes window to see if an indexing service is running.
  • oldexars - Using the same procedure mentioned by quinland, while viewing the processes running, click on the image name column label to sort that field alphabetically, then look down and see how many instances of svchost.exe are running. Apparently, any program you install on your computer may use a separate instance of svchost.exe in its method of monitoring the internet for update services.
It has come to my attention that many software programs that you may install on your computer silently include a scheme to "contact the mothership" as a part of the installation. The incessant need to continuously check for updates and automatically install same will send your hard drive into activity simply because a variety of programs are monitoring for internet connections and on a predetermined cue from some hidden code, will activate the update search.
By watching the CPU column numbers within Windows Task Manager, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the offending process that is tying up the hard drive (higher numbers imply more resources in use). A word of advice though, if you have any hopes of catching the action in progress, I would suggested having the Windows Task Manager already up and running in the background BEFORE the hard drive activity begins because otherwise, there will be a major delay once the activity has begun.
Don't be surprised to discover that Symantec (Norton) or Sunbelt (CounterSpy) might be among the programs using all those resources if those are your internet security programs of choice.
While turning the auto-update features off may be possible for some programs, there are others that will not let you easily choose this option.
  • Ray - Windows also has things that it likes to do when the computer is not busy, like creating a restore point or indexing (as mentioned above).

Adobe updates will not install

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1183562755/

  • carybrn - For some reason when I download the updates on Adobe Reader and download Adobe Flash Player, it seems to be loading but never quite gets there. The programs are not in my program file. Something is stopping it from actually installing. Any ideas what?
  • Ray - I also have a problem with the update for Adobe Reader. It downloads the file, but then when it installs it, it fails. So it never gets updated.
After putting up with that for many months, I uninstalled Adobe and then reinstalled it. That solved the problem.
  • dlwolff0 - Check this web page for solutions for installing the Flash player. They cover several possible issues. http://www.softwarepatch.com/network-security/flashdownload-security.html

inserting picture in e-mail message

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1183756818/

  • billrobb - how do i send pictures by e-mail so it is received not as an attachment but as part of the original e-mail, i.e. showing the picture?
  • Ray - Many attachments that are pictures are shown at the end of the email message.
To put the picture in the message itself, insert it in. With Outlook Express this is done by going to the Insert menu item at the top of the message window and selecting Picture... from the dropdown list.
It can also be inserted by pasting the picture in from a different source.

  • Major Geeks - rharris270 - Major Geeks is a website that lists many free and some commercial programs. It also provides news about updates to many programs, problems/fixes, and some general topics. On the left side of the homepage is a list of types of software. I have had good luck with software obtained via Major Geeks. Note that the WinRescue series of programs are listed under "registry", not under "backup", which contains things like disk/parition imaging tools. http://www.majorgeeks.com/
    There is a also a MAC-related website: http://mac.majorgeeks.com/

  • GiveAwayOfTheDay.com - Steelbone - Take a look at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com, especially today. There is a good dvd burning software that can be downloaded today for FREE!
