Program Recovery

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1173289726/

  • huntdriver - Is ther any way to recover a program that was accidentally deleted. My daughter was using my wife's computer and some how managed to delet Microsoft Office Works. My wife has tried to do a system restore and it doesnt help. It's an E-Machines Desktop and of course it didn't come with a recovery disk.(Why did they stop supplying them) Any way if soemone can help I'd appreciate it. I knwo my wife will.
  • Ray - I thought that E-Machines put a restore function on the harddrive. On one of the beginning screens it should tell which keys to press to begin restore.
No, restoring the registry does not recover deleted files.
The only other option is to undelete it. This may or may not work. You can get File Scavenger for free (at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filescavenger.html, well, it used to be free. Now it has a 30 day limit.) which will search the drive for undeleted files and let you restore them. You should try this one before you do anything else because the more you do on your computer the more likely it is that you will overwrite the deleted files and lose them for good.
Another possibility is to copy the Microsoft Office Works folders from a different computer. I doubt that it will work, but it is worth a try.
If that does not work, you can always get an Office replacement called Open Office for free (at http://download.openoffice.org/index.html). It is not quite as good as MS Office, but it is close.
This shows the importance of regularly making backups.
  • Meri051846 - Hi Ray, I was reading your answer about the "Program Recovery" question and it created a question in my mind. I do my backups fairly regularly, but I was under the impression that a person could NOT backup actual programs. I use Win Rescue XP and normally just backup My Documents, My Pictures, etc. From your answer, it sounds like you can backup programs. Please clear this up for me and, possibly, for others. Thank you for your wonderful help, as usual. MERI
  • Ray - It is true that a person cannot back up an individual program and get all of the drivers and registry settings that go along with it, but you can back up the files just in case they get deleted. It is especially important that you back up files that you don't have replacements for (like, if you don't have the program on CD or its installation file).
Huntdriver did not remove or uninstall the program and so the drivers and registry settings are still there. Huntdriver just lacks the files that were deleted. If those files are restored, then it should work again.
  • Meri051846 - Thank you, Ray, for clearing that up for me.

CDs won't play

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1174832713/

  • BillWerth - Sometimes I burn a CD and then try to play it, or send it to a friend as a gift, and he/she can 't play it on their home or car stereo. Even for myself, it might play on the Marantz (small entertainment-type stereo) but not on the more elaborate home system. Seems very bizaare. Anyway, I use Nero, my system is Windows XP professional, everything works fine. I'm puzzled by the inconsistency of the Burn process end product - it only happens once in a while. I use brand name blanks, as well.
  • Ray - You must use CD/Rs.
CD/RWs will not work on a CD player (the type that are not a part of a computer). CD/RWs will work on a computer CD drive and will work on the newer CD players in cars, but not on the older standalone CD players.
  • BillWerth - Thanks!

Error with Film File

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175057223/

  • Ted Lawrence - When I have downloaded a film through an ftp program like ARES and I then come to play the film I get an error message saying that windows explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down. I also get this message when I rest my mouse pointer on the film file. I am running windows xp pro. I hope you can help
  • Ray - That sounds like Data Execution Prevention. Windows assumes those files are bad even though they probably are not and so it gives you that error. There is more information at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 about this.
Data Execution Prevention is new in WinXP SP2 and is set up in the boot.ini file after the command, /noexecute. Data Execution Prevention can be disabled by opening the boot.ini file in the C:\ directory and making sure that the /noexecute setting is followed by =AlwaysOff (so it would be /noexecute=AlwaysOff).
  • Ted Lawrence - I cannot find 'boot.ini' can you please help
  • Ray - In Windows Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options. On the Folder Options window go to the View tab. Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" checkbox and make sure the "Show hidden files and folders" item is marked. Then click on the OK button.
That should allow you to see the boot.ini file in C:\.
  • Ted Lawrence - Thank you very much for your prompt reply, I have done what you said and all is working, and playing, as it should. Thank you for a very good service Ted.

Replacing operating System

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175281895/

  • huntdriver - what is the right way to replace an operating system on a laptop. I wnat to replace a corrupted xp home system with a good one. I have an oem copy to install. I just need to know how to get it on there so I don't have a computer with 2 operating systems.
  • Ray - Just put the CD in the CD drive and run install. Install it to the same location where the old Windows is (probably C:\Windows). It should ask you about that during installation. Installing over the old one should correct any problems that you had and keep your old setup. It is just easier that way. You won't have to reinstall all of the programs that you had before.
Some Windows installations do not allow installing over the previous version. If yours is that way, it will tell you during installation.
If you don't install Windows to old location, you can always go back after Windows is installed and running properly and delete the old Windows directory. Just make sure that you don't delete the new Windows directory.
  • huntdriver - Thank you. Now I have one more question and you will have to forgive me for not knowing what is probably a pretty basic question. How do I tell the old directory from the new one and how do I get it deleted? Thanks.
  • Ray - The installation program should have told you where it found the old one to be. It is probably C:\Windows. Do not delete the old one unless you have already installed the new one and you know where the new one is. If you updated Windows into the old directory, there will be no old directory to delete.

Reinstall older version of windows

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175477420/

  • joabarak@msn.com - I have windows professional on my computer. I want to reinstall windowsxp home edition. what steps do I need to do. Thank you very much.
  • Ray - Put the XP Home CD in the CD drive and follow the instructions.
  • joabarak@msn.com - Ray can I install another Windows xp home over the windows xp professional even if the professional one is bad. Will I have to reinstall all my programs that I have on the old program. I got to the page on the set up trying to do this and it gives a caution: Installing multiple operating systems on a single partition is not recommended. To learn more about installing multiple operating systems on a single computer see www.microsoft.com/windows/multiboot.asp. This confuses me more. Sorry I am not very familiar with the operating system part. I saw on another quesion you had said to put it in the same place as the other operating system. Thank you very much.
  • Ray - Yes, you can install XP Home over XP Professional even if XP Professional is bad. You need to install it to the same directory as to where XP Professional was (this will probably be C:\Windows).
By operating system it means Windows. If you replace the old Windows with the new Windows, there will not be multiple operating systems on one partition (in other words, two Windows on one drive) because you will be replacing the old one with the new. If it is telling you that you will have multiple operating systems, you must not be installing it to the same location as where the old one was. This is also called Updating. You want to select Update (if you are given that choice) even though you are really downdating.
When you Update, the Windows installation program will try to repair whatever was wrong with the old Windows and incorporate the settings into the new Windows. If it is successful at that, you will not have to reinstall any of your old programs. If it is not successful, you will have to reinstall everything.

Does Second HDD run too?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175513123/

  • waterwall - My C drive has been a whiner from day one and masks even the fan noise from the computer. So I am wondering if the much quieter D HDD on the same IDE channel spins all the time or just when paged. I use it for backup and archiving so it isn't called on a lot. They are on cable select and I am running XP (no RAID).
  • Ray - All of the time.
There is a setting in Power Options in the Control Panel called "Turn off hard disks" which you can set to turn a drive off after a certain amount of time of non-use.
Hibernate and Standby also shut down the harddrives.

setup disk problem

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175878996/

  • x3skidaddy - I have fdisk my computer due to problems on it and I cannot use the setup disk windows xp or the windows 98. I need help please!!!
  • Ray - It would be nice to know more details. How is it that you cannot use the setup disk? What is happening? What error are you receiving? ect.
Assuming that you did everything right with fdisk, you must then format each drive that you fdisked. Fdisk should only be used by experienced users.

QuickLaunch Icons Disordered

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175898956/

  • plonkeroo - Some time ago we had a discussion on this forum about fixing the order of QuickLaunch icons and we eventually came up with the answer.
Unfortunately the same problem has arisen again. I have looked through the forum archives but I cannot trace the original posts.
Does anyone recall these posts or alternatively recall what the solution was?
  • Ray - When you do a search, you need to make sure that you set all of the settings before doing the search. For example, you have to select the areas that you want to search (the default is only in the Questions section) and you need to select the date of the post (the default is 30 days ago or newer).
I did a search for Quick Launch and I found a post called Order of icons in Quick Launch at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1140104674/
  • plonkeroo - Thank you for finding the link!
To put everything in a nutshell the remedy is .....
"Use RegEdit to go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and change NoSaveSettings to 00 00 00 00. Restart your computer, put the icons in the order that you want them to be in, then restart again. This time the icons should remain in the order you placed them in. Hope this one works for everyone (Laverne)"
"Objective achieved! The trick appears to be not to just edit directly (which is what I originally did) but to then save the Policies\Explorer section as a REG file - which gives "NoSaveSettings"=00 00 00 00 or hex:00,00,00,00 - and then to drag the icons into the required order and then activate the REG file and then reboot (plonkeroo)"

hibernate, slow wake up

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176032967/

  • John - Computer works perfect except takes 5-6 min. to wake up. Windows XP SP2 with all updates, McAfee, Zone Alarm, also usually a little bit of activity on hard drive (disabled indexing) Sometimes shuts down before waking up so have to start over. Did disable most start up programs.
  • Ray - The number of startup programs has no effect on the speed of waking up from hibernation. It has more to do with what was running when you went into hibernation. I would think that Zone Alarm and McAfee have some influence.
Waking up from hibernation does not even touch the startup items because it is not restarting Windows. Instead it is loading into memory what was on the computer when you hibernated. Some of the programs detect that they have been in hibernation and so refresh themselves which may take some time. Also hooking back up to the internet if you have cable or DNS can take some time after being in hibernation.

Microsoft Mpeg4 Codec needed

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176209065/

  • Talon - I have a Kworld Video capture card that when I attempt to capture video I am unable to use MPEG4. It tells me it is unable to find a Mpeg4 Codec, that I need to download one from Microsoft or use a Divx one. I am looking for a free Mprg4 Codec to be honest. I tried the Divx one (which worked great) but flooded my PC with Spam popups UGH. Anyone know where I can get a free Microsoft Mpeg4 Codec? Thats not going to flood me with spam pop-ups?
  • dlwolff0 - I use this website for codecs: http://www.freecodecs.com/ I have had no problems with the codecs downloaded on the website [using the K-lite codec pack standard].

Lines on Desktop

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1174143777/

  • shman - I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. I have a Biostar (M7NCG 400) w/AMD 3000 processor. XGI Volari Family v1.13.04. Display Adapter. I have a question which I hope someone can help me with. When I start up in the morning my destop has lines running up and down all the way across the destop I can still see the destop and the computer stops responding and I restart and it is ok except for one line which looks like a fence in the middle of my destop running horizontal which goes away after awhile. The verticle lines only happen once in awhile but I think they are a precurser of something going to happen. Does anyone know what is happening. Thanks
  • dlwolff0 - Check for a new driver for your video card. If the problem persists after getting the latest driver, or if this is the only problem showing up, then either the video card or the monitor is preparing to go out.
The vertical lines usually indicate problems with a capacitor. My best guess is the monitor is the problem hardware.
  • shman - I appreciate you reply. But I don't think the monitor is the problem as I have been using the monitor with a backup computer and there has not been any lines. I also installed a new video driver. So time will tell as I don't have the foggiest. Thanks so much for your help.
  • dlwolff0 - My messup, I should also have mentioned that this could be due to a power supply problem.
  • shman - Just to update. I finaLLY BIT THE BULLET AND REPLACED THE VIDEO CARD. That was obvioudly the problem. Thanks for your input.
  • dlwolff0 - Thanks for the update. Just out of curiosity, what video card did you get as a replacement?
  • shman - Thanks for asking I got a relatively cheap card since I wasn't sure about the problem: Newegg had the following card "PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 / 256MB DDR / PCI / Dual VGA / Video Card" and its been 3 days and everything is working fine.

All In One Fax problem

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176503731/

  • Morg - Dell 926 all in one printer does it all, except send faxes (receives only). On startup, error--MS Fax. dll pops up. Vista was recently installed and this problem started after the installation. It worked fine with XP. What is the solution?
  • Ray - It sounds like you do not have drivers that are compatible with Vista. Go to the Dell website and see if they have Vista drivers there for your all-in-one device. If not, write or call them and ask them about it.

Will WinRescue save my goofs after RegVac?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176765525/

  • dragonfly - Hi, If I change files using Reg Vac, and I made a mistake, will Win Rescue recover my goof? (Providing I used Win Rescue first of course).
  • Ray - Yes, if you restore the registry with WinRescue (for more information about WinRescue go to http://superwin.com/rescuemenu.htm).
Actually, RegVac (for more information about RegVac go to http://superwin.com/regvac.htm) can backup and restore the registry in the Expert mode. Another option is to use an XP Restore Point.         Since RegVac only changes the registry, restoring a backup of the registry made before RegVac was run will restore any and all changes made using RegVac.
  • dragonfly - Thank you for your answer. You folks have a GREAT line of products.

Print Screen on Intel Mac

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175602856/

  • irena - The print screen key on a Windows keyboard captures the screen effectively. But does anyone know how to get a screen capture on the new Intel chip Macs when you switch over to Windows? Mac keyboards don't have a print screen key.
  • Olives - You can always try using the print screen key on the on-screen keyboard program (virtual keyboard) or get a screen capture program that doesn't use the print screen key for a shortcut.

Registry Defrag vs Registry Compact

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176990341/

  • scotteescott - Is there a difference between Registry Defragging and Registry Compacting or are they basically the same process? The names would suggest that they are different and I would guess that they both make the registry smaller. Does RegVac Registry Cleaner perform both of these functions? If they are different then which is the preferred or recommended process and is one process better than the other?
  • Ray - They are the same thing. Registry Defragging is the same thing as Registry Compacting.

searching word documents

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176440412/

  • billrobb - I have a phrase that I want to find in one of my word documents. I don't know which Word document. Is there a way of finding it?
  • Ray - Click on the Start button in Windows and select Search from the Start menu. This will open the Search Results window.
The Search Results window has two textboxes near the top on the left side.
Leave the first textbox (All or part of the file name) blank or if you know that all of the filenames of the Word documents end in .doc, you can put .doc in the first textbox.
Enter the word or phrase in the second textbox (A word or phrase in the file) that you want to find.
If you know where the Word documents are, specify this in the "Look in" dropdown box. One of the items in the dropdown list is Browse... at the bottom. Choosing Browse... will allow you to specify a specific folder.
Click on the Search button and it will find all of the files that have that phrase in it.

Reinstall of Win Xp Sp2

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1176570290/

  • shman - I had to reinstall Win XP and now when I try to install Sp2 I get all the wasy through the install process and I get an access denied and it undoes everything. Why would I get an access denied error. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.
  • dlwolff0 - Take a look at this article in the Microsoft knowledge base. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903219/en-us Looks like this is a security related issue. Did you install all available Windows updates before trying to install SP2? If not, do so then retry the install. If so, I would try disabling the registry entry noted in the article then try the install again. It should work then.
  • shman - Just a note to update you on the reinstall of SP 2 I asked microsoft and their support personnel indicated that I had to reset my system and furnished a zip file with the following 2 files: reset.cmd and subinacl. I opened the reset.cmd and ran it. After which I reinstalled SP 2 and everything was fixed. Thanks for the help.

I have to click on OS choice at startup

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1177725683/

  • okiedad - each time i log on I first have to chose my operating system and i don,t have two, just one gets to be pain in butt, don,t know what happened just recently started doing this!
  • Ray - The boot.ini file is responsible for.
Boot.ini is usually located in C:\. If a different drive is the boot drive, then it will be located in its root (in other words, if the drive is D, it will be in D:\ ).
Find boot.ini in Windows Explorer (to open Windows Explorer, right click on the Start button and select Explore from the popup menu). If you do not see the boot.ini file, change your settings in Windows Explorer (in the Tools - Folder Options menu, View tab, Advanced Settings) so that the "Hide protected operating system files" checkbox is not checked and the "Show hidden files and folders" checkbox is checked.
Or you can type, "msconfig" in Run and go to the BOOT.INI tab.
Boot.ini can be opened with Notepad. Its contents should look something like this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect
    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

The [boot loader] section tells your computer what to do when it comes to the startup screen. The lines under [operating systems] are the operating systems that the startup screen lists for you to select.
If timeout is not 0, the startup screen will wait the timeout amount of seconds for you to select something. After that amount of time, the default setting is selected and Windows starts.
If default is not specified or is wrong, the startup screen will wait for you to make a choice of operating systems. This sounds like what is wrong in your case. The default setting should match one of the [operating systems] items. So as you see above, the default setting is multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS (this is actually the location of the Windows directory on your computer) and that matches up with multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect under [operating systems]. If any of the numbers in multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS or the word, WINDOWS, are different in the two settings, they will not match up.
When a hard drive is added to a computer, those numbers sometimes change. But if both settings are wrong, you will get an error message about hal.dll, so I suspect that somehow only the default settings is wrong.

Too much protection?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1175442855/

  • BillWerth - This question is about being "overprotected." First of all, is it possible? Secondly, I have McAfee Security Suite, but I always see AVG free material on the Internet. AVG has a great record, from the user reviews, and so I was thinking of downloading as a "trial" and then purchasing, if it worked out. I just don't want it conflicting with my McAfee, etc. You get my drift, I'm sure. Please help out - my gut feeling is that you can't be too protected in this age of snooping, phishing and so on.
  • dlwolff0 - Never run two antivirus programs on the same computer, unless you want it to slow to a crawl. The programs will inevitably conflict and will insert numerous conflicting entries in the registry.
  • BillWerth - Many thanks about overloading anti-virus protection. I'll just stick with what's working well now.
  • gunslinger - ok, first let me say that if you had asked this about 3 years ago i would have had about 8-10 diff. spyware ,ad ware, malware protection programs installed, plus antivrus. not anymore. you reach the point of diminishing returns very fast. what good is a well protected pc if it is so slow as to be unusable? now days, as soon as i do a fresh install and get everything tweaked just so, i do a full backup using acronis true image. that way if i do get a virus, or malware, it will take about 20 mins for me to have my pc back to perfect. as far as protection goes i keep it to a bare min. kaspersky internet security, and spyware blaster. if i think i have gotten spyware i'll run portable ad-aware, spybot s&d, and a-squared from my flash drive. i have been doing this for over 2 years now and i can say that i have not had spyware or viruses ( i can count on one hand the number of pop ups i have had). thats me 2 cents.
  • Leesa - The one thing I have learned is to not use any program that is a "suite". They become resource hogs. However, if MacAfee is working for you, no need to switch to something else. For resons I don't know, I have never had pop ups. I run Kerio Firewall now that Zone Alarm became a suite, and caused me mega problems, and AVG 7 (paid version). Have heard of many people who swear by AVG Free, also. I also have a neat little program by BillP called WinPatrol.

Format & Partition HDD

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1178036112/

  • a1driller - My son at college has a Toshiba Satellite A45. Windows has quit working and he wants a total new re-install of Win XP. When you bootup from the recovery disc, there is no option for re-install, just recovery. So I assume we need to do a format and partition first, then re-install. My question, can you use one of the HDD manufacturers disc wizards to format and partition HDD's from other manufacturers? The HDD in this computer is a Toshiba and I can download Seagates, Western Digital, etc and it will help to do this work on the HDD in lieu of doing in DOS.
  • dlwolff0 - Sorry, but each manufacturer's software works only on their hard drives. What you get trying it with a different HD is a message that it detected no Western Digital [for example] hard drive on the system.
