Removing programs from Add and Remove
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1190286864/
- mercabz - I have 2 programs,( Adobe Reader 705 & 707), on my computer that I need to remove so that I can install the latest version. The main problem being that the Change / Remove tag at the bottom righthand corner is missing on both programs. I have trid to remove them manually, using the instructions supplied by Microsoft about going into Registry Entry, but that failed, I also emailed Adobe to see if they could supply any ideas, but they did not respond, so I am stuck with the programs, which consume a fairly hefty amount of MB's and don't know where to go next.
Can anyone shed any light on the subject, or any ideas how I can get over the problem.
I once read about a similar problem, and instructions on how to solve it on BootDisk, but extensive serching has revealed nothing.
- Ray - I would think that the easiest thing to do would be to reinstall Adobe Reader. To do so, open Windows Explorer, find the Adobe folder (probably in C:\Program Files) and go to the Adobe/Acrobat 7.0/Setup Files/RdrBig/ENU folder. Double click on the setup.exe file. That will take you through the reinstalling process for Adobe Reader. Reinstalling should correct any problems you have with it.
A harder way to go would be to use RegVac's Add/Remove Editor or our freeware program, Add/Remove Pro, and find the Adobe Reader item in its three lists (the main list, All Entries, and Installer List). My guess is that it is in the Installer List but not in the other lists. Removing it from there may correct your problem.
Close programs before shut down?
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1168188796/
- mortspeck - I apologize for the simple question: when numerous programs are minimized, I was told that each should be closed separately, rather than just shutting down before doing that. Does it depend upon the version of windows?
- Ray - There are two reasons (that I can think of) why you should close all programs before shutting down Windows.
One is that the programs may need to save information and just shutting down Windows may not allow that to happen. It depends on the program as to whether this needs to be done or not. I assume this is not a problem with you but you may at sometime forget that you were writting a letter or something like that and it may not get saved.
The other reason is that if you don't close the programs, Windows will. If a program cannot be shut down by Windows, Windows will hang up or abort the shutdown process and you will wonder why Windows does not complete the shutdown process.
I just always think that it is a good idea to close all or most of the programs running before shutting down Windows.
It usually is not a big problem if you don't close the programs, but you should definitely shut down Windows properly instead of just turning off the computer.
task manager problem
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1168328839/
- bobwilson508 - It use to be that when I right clicked on an empty space on my task bar, or hit Ctrl,Alt, and Delete at the same time it would open the TASK MANAGER and show all the programs that were running on my PC. NOW, When I do that all I get is a graph showing CPU Usage and CPU History. My wife also uses this computer. But when she brings up the task manager, it opens the way it should, ( showing all the open programs ). What did I do to cause mine to open the way it does? I'm using a Gateway Desktop PC running Windows XP, with 512MB's ram. Any help would be appreciated.
- dlwolff0 - There should be four tabs displayed in the task manager window. You are viewing one of them. I assume that the tabs are not being displayed, since all you would have to do to get the view you want is click on the correct tab. What are you seeing when task manager is open? Are you seeing the menu bar? It sounds as if you have changed the view options for the program, perhaps accidentally.
- Ray - My guess as to what is happening is that you clicked on the Performance tab in the Task Manager and then closed the Task Manager. The Task Manager remembers which tab was selected the last time it was opened and displays that tab when it is open. So when you open Task Manager it shows the Performance tab. You probably did not see the tabs at the top.
If you open the Task Manager and click on the Applications tab at the top, it will show the open programs. When you close it and then open it again, it will open showing the open programs as you want it to.
- bobwilson508 - Hey Guys, I want to thank you, ( dlwolffo & Ray ), for the suggestions I recieved. All I could see when I opened the task manager was a big, checkerd screen. There was no menu bar or anything else. After reading your posts I started thinking that Ray was right, That I'd closed the task manager in that VIEW. And sure enough, I did! After clicking around on the open view I finally, accidently, clicked on the menu bar somehow and...... POOF...... there it was! Thanks guys, I would never have found it without your help.( At least not for a lot longer time. )
Hard Drive Upgrade
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1168197238/
- vsnpsa - I have an older dell computer, 450mhz, 512ram w/13gb. I would like to replace the 13gb with a 300gb. What is the best way to move all of my files & operating system (xp pro) to the new hard drive. I know if you move some files that the licenses would have issues. This computer originally had win 98 and I upgraded to xp pro.
- Ray - Some harddrives come with software which will transfer the files from one drive to the other. I think that at least one of the harddrive manufacturers has that software on their website.
If you don't go that route and you still want to copy the files over, you should get software that transfers an image and not the individual files over. Drive Image XML is a freeware program that can do that.
With either one of the above options, you need to make sure that the new drive ends up with the drive letter of the old drive or you will end up with all kinds of problems.
Another possibility is to add the new drive as an extra drive and still use your old drive to run the operating system and the old programs.
- jcm3008 - lots of ways. if the hard drive is a good one then why not keep it and use it as a backup or for other things. you can either make it secondary inside or purchase a very inexpensive external case. by installing it in an external case, you can plug it into a USB port and use it as an external hard drive. once installed, you can just copy and past your existing files to the new hard drive or just leave them there and access them as needed.
Scan Criteria for A1Click Ultra PC Cleaner
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169051147/
- coolmanoh - I am interested in buying the A1Click Ultra PC Cleaner, but first I have a question: What criteria does this program use to distinguish trash from necessary files?
- Ray - A1Click (http://www.superwin.com/a1clean.htm) has an assortment of 87 preset and configurable processes which use different criteria. If you look in the Cleaner Settings section of A1Click, it shows what each item looks for.
Hard Disk Status with "Stand By"
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1168983025/
- JohnNM - I haven't been able to get a definitive answer to what happens with an Internal and an External Hard Drive when one select "Stand By" - or what happens when we put the computer in the "Hibernate" mode. I want them to stop turning in order to prolong their lives.
"Help" tells us the difference between the two regarding saved data, but it doesn't answer my question. I hope one of you good folks can.
- dlwolff0 - I think what you want is under Power Options in the Control Panel. Under Power Schemes, you can set the monitor and hard disks to shut down after periods of inactivity ranging from 3 minutes to never. You can also set the system to go into standby or hibernate over the same time ranges.
- Ray - Just to clarify what dlwolff0 said, there actually is a setting in Power Schemes (see Power Options in the Control Panel) just for the hard drives. It allows you to have the hard drives shut down after a certain amount of time.
To answer your question, even if the hard drives are set to never turn off, they will turn off when your computer enters hibernate or standby. So both in hibernate and standby the drives stop spinning and are not used or operated.
Hard drives make a whining noise when they are spinning. It is obvious when they are not spinning because there is no noise.
- JohnNM - Thanks Guys, That's exactly what I wanted to know, particularly regarding the 'Hibernate/Standby'. I didn't want to utilize the "Power Schemes" time options.
Screen stuck on Low Resolution
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169225233/
- gshibu5 - Color Quality is set on "Medium (16 bit) and it is stuck there.
Screen Resolution also stuck at 640 X 480. Tried right click - Properties - Setting. Thats where I see the Screen Resolution and color quality. Both are set at the above settings and the slider on the screen resolution
wont slide. The drop down box on the color quality has only one option (16 bits). The monitor is showing defult monitor. I donnt have Monitor CD. Any help will be highly appreciated.
- Ray - Either your monitor will not support anything else (I doubt it) or you need the correct driver for your monitor. If you get the correct driver, it will allow you to select more.
I would first look at the manufacturer's website of your monitor. If you don't find anything there, try using other default drivers in Windows or do a search for drivers for your monitor on the internet.
If you have Windows XP, it should have the correct driver.
- gshibu5 - Thanks Ray, My Monitor is Samsung SyncMaster 591s.I have downloaded the driver as suggested by you. But When i tried to install the driver, it gave the error message.
Video card driver is not intalled properly. Please install video card driver first for monitor auto installation.
I dont have a seperate Video and Audio card, It is onboard. My OS is Widows XP SP2 WHICH I INSTALLED RECENTLY, after which the problem started.Even my audio is not working.I read that this problem may occur when a OS is newly istalled. My mtherboard is KOBIAN PI845 GLM 5.0.
IS THERE A WAY OUT. THANKS.
- Ray - Your motherboard probably has the video card on it as a part of it. Windows XP is supposed to have all drivers and it sounds like it doesn't or the driver that it has is not working. Maybe your motherboard's manufacturer has drivers on its website or an answer to this problem. I would ask them.
A way around this, howbeit an expensive way around, would be to buy a video card and install it.
- gshibu5 - Thanks Ray, You are absolutly right. My motherboard have onboard video and audio card.Somehow the XP installation missed out/CORRUPTED the right drivers.I installed rhe drivers with the motherboard CD-ROM.Now its working OK.
Update File accumulation
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1168897547/
- Charles Carter - In Windows search, I keep accumulating blue files like, $NtUnatalkb883939$. What is the story on these? If safe, is there a way to delete them all and/or prevent their accumulation?
- Ray - They are your Winodws updates.
- Charles Carter - I believe you are right about their being updates, but think they have been installed. There are around fifty of the $NtUninstalk --------------$ folders and are much the same, mostly over one megabyte. The common files are spunist.exe (windows service pack uninstall, spunist.inf (setup info.) and upds.dll (windows servicing setup API. It seems that everytime I turn around, more are added.
- Ray - Our program, A1Click Ultra PC Cleaner (http://www.superwin.com/a1clean.htm) cleans out the ones that are older than 2 months old.
how to add right-click functions
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169392181/
- wallygrove - Before I downloaded IE&, when I right-clicked Roboform was a part of the list. Now it is not. Is there a way to add my Roboform to my right-click items?
- Ray - I am not familiar with RoboForm, so I may mispeak here, but the following information should work for RoboForm and any other program.
An easy way to add an item is to right click on one of the files that you want Roboform to open, go to the OpenWith item on the popup menu and then select Choose Program. Then you can find RoboForm. After doing that, RoboForm will be listed in the OpenWith section of the popup menu.
Another way is to add an entry in the registry under the file type that you want it displayed on.
But the best way to get it the way it was before is to reinstall RoboForm. Installing it to the same place that it already is should put the RoboForm item back in the right click menu.
New Windows Media Player doesn't rip CDs
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169337442/
- Anashwaran - Since I have installed the new WMPlayer 11 I cannot rip CD's anymore like in version 10. I get an error message saying that there is a problem with the Windows Media Digital Rights Management called DRM system! As if life was not complicated enough. Now I went to the indicated site and they talk about contracts and professionnal rights etc... I just didn't want to go on with all that, and started using again my iTune program, where there are no problems. Could anyone explain what is going on here?
- wtayo2 - I have not experienced this problem personnally, but I have read a number of articles about WMP11 and the DRM issue.
I am not a real fan of the Inquirer but they do have a few words about loss of rights with WMP11. - Shred your rights http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34523
This next link may give you a little insight on what may work to rip your CD's - Rip with "Copy protected " turned off http://www.ultraproducts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2931
Are RegVac & A1Click both needed
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169955303/
- joabarak@msn.com - Do I need to purchase both Reg Vac & A1Click Ultra PC Cleaner to keep my pc working good. I have used the trial versions. I have used other programs before and I like these better. I have removed my Norton Antivirus. I am not sure if I need another antivirus & spryware program. I will appreciate any help I can get.
- Ray - RegVac and A1Click do different things. RegVac cleans the registry and A1Click cleans the hard drive. They do not clean or protect against viruses and spyware.
Universal Host Controller
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169957784/
- Morg - Device Manager shows 4 Unversal Serial Bus (USB) controllers under the main catagory "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Two of the controllers are old NEC universal host controllers, and are no longer attached to the system. The other two are Intel 82801BA/BAM USB universal Host Controllers-2442 and 2444. I've tried to re-install the Intel controllers, but the wizard states "an error occurred during installion of the device". I've tried the "recommended" and the "advanced" methods, and nothing works. I've uninstalled them and scanned for hardware changes, but still no-go. I've gone into Safe mode and did the same, but still no-go.
The bottom line is that until I get Intel 82801BA/BAM USB universal Host Controllers-2442 and 2444 back, my computer installed usb ports will not work. What can I do?
- dlwolff0 - Go to Intel's website and download the latest support files for the chipset on your motherboard. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Support_Intel.aspx What you want is the INF Update Utility. This installs the latest version of inf files to allow the chipset to control USB and other computer functions.
Something Messing RegVac Up
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169998944/
- rarrows - My computer can not run Regvac from windows . It works fine in Safe mode.
using 4.02.28. I've tried reinstalling and updating to no avail. I'm using Win XP Pro.
The error message is: Runtime error 216@ 00403BE6.
I've tried a through cleaning of registry and computer files. I've tried running via msconfig, eliminating each item one at a time. nothing seems to work. Regvac had been running fine previously. I realize the problem lies in my computer and is not the Regvac Program.
- Ray - Have you tried renaming the regvac.ini file in the RegVac directory and then running RegVac? If not, try that.
- rarrows - Problem solved, Thought you would want the followup. I renamed the Ini file, but it did not work. I traced the problem to a defective Java update. I loaded the update manually and when it completed, Reg Vac worked fine.
- Ray - Good detective work. Thanks for letting us know.
unwanted and strange fonts
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1170546664/
- 2Kilo - I have a font view program and when I look at fonts I have about 6 of the called Z@R2C.tmp, the 2C is slightly different on the rest. They don't show up in windows explorer. Iv'e done searches and they are never found and I can't delete them. They print out somethimg like Wingding fonts I am running XP Pro sp2. Does anyone have any ideas what the heck these are.
- dlwolff0 - Try this site and perhaps you will be able to find them. http://www.identifont.com/ They will attempt to identify any font by the answers you give to a series of questions.
defective CDs
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1169701182/
- Paul Kolodner - Have you had this experience? About a year ago, I bought a stack of 50 writeable CD-ROMS from Office Max, and I wrote on a few of them. Lately, I tried to do the same, but the program didn't detect a disk in the drive. On a lark, I tried some of the disks in the middle of the stack, and they work fine. It's the ones on top that don't work. Why should they be defective? The only hint I have is nasal: when I open the case, I get a whiff of fumes that might be plasticizer, mould release agent, monomers left over from the plastic, or something like that. Any comments?
- Ray - I would think that long exposure to direct sunlight could ruin them even though I do not remember any such warnings. CDs are written on by the laser in your CD drive burning dots on the photo sensitive surface. The surface is only sensitive to intense light as in a laser but maybe long exposure to direct sunlight would also affect it.
- Paul Kolodner - Ray, I don't think that's the problem. These disks have been sitting in their original
container, which is plastic and pretty opaque to UV. It has a paper label around the edge, so light can only enter from the top. The problem seems to extend down to several CD's below the one on top, and they are shadowed by the ones above them. Furthermore, the room they are sitting in has the lights off most of the time. I think the real reason is simpler: these things are not stable and should only be used for short-term storage anyway.
- Ray - You could ask the manufacturer.
- Paul Kolodner - Now Ray, come on. The chance of me getting a human at Office Max is 1%. The chance of that person knowing the manufacturer is 1%. The chance of finding a phone number or email address of the manufacturer is 1%. The chance of getting through to the manufacturer is 1%. The chance of the contact at the manufacturer knowing what the problem could be is 1%. That's one part in 10 to the 10. Them's homeopathic odds. The time spent getting through to a person at Office Max would be worth about 5X the cost of the disks. The time spent going to the next step is worth about 5X the cost of the disks, etc. At least this cost adds linearly. But you get the picture: the sensible thing to do is to throw them away and forget about it.
- dlwolff0 - Try returning them to the store for a refund or replacement, next time you are there. It won't cost you anything and you might get lucky I have a similar stack of CDR's that I bought from Office Depot. They have the same smell. These are at least 2 years old and I haven't had any that weren't useable yet. My bet is that they are made by the same manufacturer as yours. This media is pretty reliable and while I don't know the maximum life of the storage disks, I have some that I burned 7 years ago that are still readable.
- pschonstrom - Having been in another life a retail office supply store manager for over 10 years of that life, my advice – return them to the store that you got them from for either a refund or replacement. The discs are defective in their manufacture therefore the store has to return to you your money even a year later. They cannot prove that you did not store them in accordance with manufacturers specifications unless they are obviously warped, discolored, scratched, etc. The smell? All plastics smell, especially when new and it sounds as though these have been closed up all that time. OK, maybe not airtight – but I just checked a sleeve that initially held 50 bought four months ago from which I’ve used maybe a dozen, and they still have that plastic chemical odor.
And hey, please give retailers a break. In another life, as a buyer I dealt with Office-Max, Office-Depot, Staples and on and on. They just aren’t all that way – believe me.
- Ray - Someone sent me an email saying that both he and his son has experienced defective CDs just like you with different brands right out of a new package.
Losing Internet Connection
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1170072575/
- coolwk - Hi - I have cable modem intrnet service. After a certain time, (perhaps 8 hours), seeming randomly, I lose the internet connection. I am using Windows XP, a Motorola SB5103 modem, and a Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router. I restore the internet by either rebooting, logging off and on, turning the modem off, unplugging the router, in no order and I have no idea what works.
- Ray - There are a number of things that could cause that. I would contact your cable company and see if they can help you.
- coolwk - I do suspect that it is my cable provider. It is a small local cable company. I called the cable company and the person I spoke with said they were having problems too! It is very frustrating.
- atcrunner - We use a cable company for our internet connection at work. When it works it is very good but we have had the same problems that you have experienced for over a year. Every time that I contact them they do something remotely and it seems to work for awhile. Just recently I told them to fix it or I would find another service. They came out and replaced the modem and so far we are not having any problems.
- Ray - Periodically (sometimes after a week, sometimes after a month), my cable internet would have connection problems too. Sometimes rebooting the modem fixed it, sometimes it would correct itself after a few hours, but usually I would have to call the cable company to fix it. After many of these disconnects and the cable guy coming out to fix it, he explained that he did not know what the problem was. He had replaced all of the connectors and replaced filters (usually replacing the filters would get it running again for a while). Then one day he found a connection that he had missed before. It was just a metal connector that connected two cables together. He replaced it. I haven't had a problem since.
Hibernation wakes up
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1144613531/
- hansplie - I've had the same problem on two computers. When the operating system is new and there aren't many other programs installed, hibernate works well. Long before I've loaded all the programs I want to use, hibernate stops working. The Microsoft help website says that many programs are incompatible with hibernate but doesn't offer much real help.
- Ray - I have had this same problem with my laptop which is hooked into a router with my desktop computer. I tried several things to keep it from waking up and the only thing that worked was unplugging its network cable. Evidently, something coming from my desktop computer or from the internet was waking it up.
Lost Program at Start-up
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1171201673/
- JAM - I have a Great Calendar Reminder program, that I've had for years, that always came up at start-up. After messing around with my computer, when I was trying to eleminate some of the things that kept trying to run in the background, I think I deleted this program from my start-up. I don't want to re-install it, because I'll loose all of the info I've already added to the calendar for the year.
Sorry to ramble, but, is there any way to get the daily reminders to show up at start-up again? They are no longer on the start-up list.
- Ray - Find the program on your computer (look in the Start menu or in Windows Explorer) and run it manually. There should be a setting in it which will add it to startup. This would be the preferred way to add it to startup.
The next preferred way would be to reinstall it. Install does not always remove your info. You could copy all of the files in the folder to a backup folder then install and then copy them back.
Another way would be to add a shortcut in the Startup folder (in Start/All Programs) to the program. There may be parameters that you have to add to the command that runs the program and the program may want it to be in a different place. There are other ways to start a program at startup but the Startup folder is the easiest.
How to reinstall A1 PC Cleaner
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1171245252/
- SALINF5228 - I seem to have lost my icon and all the software programs for A1 Cleaner
I purchase it on Nov 12 2006. How do I get it back? Please advise.
- Ray - You can get it the same way you got it after you purchased it. Go to the Registered Users section of the A1Click page on our website and select Download Registered Version.
If you have the email that we sent to you after purchase, it tells you how to get the registered version and it has a link to the Registered Users section in it. You can have this email resent to you by selecting Send Registration Key in the Registered Users section.
Follow this same process when updating A1Click. There is no need to uninstall the previous version.
CD Drive stopped working
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1171321650/
- babe - My internal CD-RW drive stopped working. When I go in and check it's properties and drive, it states that it is working properly.....no problems. When I insert a CD in the drive, the light just constantly flickers and it won't read or write. Help!
- Ray - Usually a good cleaning will fix something like that (there is an article on how to clean a CD drive in our newsletter - http://www.superwin.com/RaysComputerTips/Issue20.htm#website).
First (especially if you don't want to take the drive apart), you should try using a CD drive cleaning kit which has a special cleaning CD in it. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't.
If you don't mind taking the drive apart (my logic in doing this is that it does not work anyway, so if I mess it up I am not out anything more but if I fix it, I just saved some money), that is the best way to clean it. Use Q-tips and rubbing alcohol to clean the inside once you get it apart. Be sure to clean the laser lens but be careful not to apply excessive pressure that would scratch it and don't touch it with your bare fingers or with something that would smudge it. You may need to move the laser assembly back and forth to clean around it (that is OK, just make sure you don't touch the lens). Also be sure to remove all dust or dirt inside the drive (this includes dust that may have collected up behind and in between the gears).
Of course, other options are to take it to the computer repair shop and let them fix it or buy a new one.
