Two operating systems

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1165174759/

  • briadeaten - I have an unusual problem. Somehow I managed to acquire two Windows XP Operating systems on my computer. One is on local disc C:, whiole the other is on local disc E:. When I boot up, I get both oiperating systems on the screen and by pressing I access drive E:.
I want to get rid of drive C:, since all my files are on the E: drive. I tried formatting Drive C: but it didn't work. I don't use any programs on the C: drive, but they are taking up a lot of room.
How can I get rid of the C: drive files, and then transfer all the programs on the E: drive over to the C :?
  • Ray - There are some files on C that are needed to boot up your computer. But you should be able to delete all of the files in C except for those in the root folder (in other words, those in C:\ ). This can be done in Windows Explorer.
The boot.ini file in C:\ lists the two Windows in it and allows for you to make a choice between the two. You can modify the boot.ini file (you may have to change its attributes before you can save the changes) so that only one of the Windows is shown.
Moving Windows from E to C may not be possible.
If the E drive used to be C, it is possible that the boot files are on E too. If they are and E is bootable (which it would be if it used to be C), you can just switch the cables from E to C and vice versa and E will become C. The problem with this is that in the Windows registry and on E, many of the settings refer to the files as being on E which are now on C. Our program, EZ File Transplanter, could change those, but it may not work completely or flawlessly.
Or if you have an image backup program, you may be able to make an image of E, and then restore the Windows part to C and change the boot.ini file. I do not know if that would work or not.
If I were you, I would do what is suggested in the first two paragraphs, keep Windows in E, and use C as extra drive space.

unwanted mail in inbox

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1164731237/

  • gshibu5 - In my in box i gets two or thre unsolicited mails daily. Even though i mark it as a spam, again it appears with a new name, uaually in someones name like.. Joes or mohan etc. What can be done to stop it.Thanks.
  • Harrysmith - I don't think there is much that can be done here. I get spam every day and like you I mark it as spam within outlook but the next day the same company make contact from a different address. The situation is even worse than it seems because my mail is filtered by Brightmail which removes large amounts of spam - and yet some still manages to get thru
  • gshibu5 - thanks harry. But let me tell a related stuff.i have two e-mail account with the same service provider.one account i use regularly while the other one sparingly. In the first account i gets only one or two spams(as mentioned earlier) but the second one is full of spam messages. Its weired isn't it? Its out of curiosity, does anybody have any clue. thanks.
  • Ray - There are basically two reasons why you receive spam: either your email address has been displayed in a public place (like on a website or on a discussion board) or someone who has received an email from that account (that could even be you) has a virus on their computer.
There is not a way to stop them once they have started. Some will stop on their own. You can prevent them by not putting the email address in public places and by not sending emails to people who get viruses.
  • Harrysmith - I suffered from another reason a few years back. My wife is called Margarita so when I signed her up for an e-mail account I was happy to find that Margarita@ XYZ was free.
The next day before she had even sent one e-mail she received several hundred pieces of spam - my conclusion is that simply/common addresses are likely to attract more spam.
  • gshibu5 - Thanks ray and harry. I got the point.
  • crs01 - This may be a good time for a tip to all who aren't aware of a piece of "netiquette." When you receive email that's addressed to multiple people, and you want to pass it along to others, once you've started the reply, edit out (delete) the long list of other email addressees from the person who sent it to you.
Also, when you address an email to multiple people yourself, put yourself in the TO: block, and then put all the other addressees in the BCC: block (that stands for "Blind Carbon Copy," a term that goes back to days of typing with carbon paper duplicates of the original when a carbon copy is sent to someone without the original receiver knowing someone else also got the letter). Everyone on the BCC: list will get the email, though it's addressed to "only" you, but no one will see who else got the email.
By using those two helpful pieces of information, you will cut down on the amount of SPAM others receive, and also help preserve others' privacy who may not want their names and email addresses spread all over the place without their permission. It's just a matter of courtesy that benefits everyone.
  • gshibu5 - Wow CR, its really a nice information.I always wondered what this Bcc is and as you mentioned it also keeps ones privacy while forwardind messages to groups. There is another block Cc, is it stands for carbon copy, what is its utility. Thanks.
  • crs01 - You can use CC: for adding additional addresses to which the email is being sent besides the main person you sent it to in the TO: block. But everyone receiving the email can still see who else is also receiving the same email - only the recipients in the BCC: field remains hidden once the email is sent.

Where is BCC?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1165291356/

  • ripz00 - CI seem to be missing the "bcc" option in Outlook Express. When creating or replying all I see are the "To" and "Cc" box.
  • Ray - Outlook Express does not show BCC. Click on the To or CC words and a dialog will open up which has BCC.
  • ripz00 - Thanks Ray, all this time using Outlook Express and didn't know how or where.
  • Ray - Charles Heineke adds:
Outlook Express DOES have a way to turn on or turn off BCC.
To do so, open a new blank email.
            Click the View menu.
Click All Headers on the dropdown menu.
Clicking that will toggle All Headers on or off, depending on which it was when you clicked it. If it has a check mark beside it, it's ON.

Does bouncing spam help?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1165493026/

  • usmaniv - I have seen some E.Mail clients e.g: INCREDIMAIL where they give you the choice to BOUNCE the unwanted mail as well as creating a SPAM filter. Does anybody know if this bouncing of message actually works.
  • Ray - It all depends on whether it is responsible spam or not.
The idea is that the returned email will be removed from the list because the list does not want to waste its time and resources sending to invalid email addresses. There definitely are lists that use software which removes bounced messages (our newsletter does), but it doesn't seem like most spam emails are sent out with that type of software.
I have tried bouncing spam messages and less than 1% was removed from the lists.
Most spam is actually the result of someone having a virus on their computer and so bouncing does nothing but put more spam out there (since the return email address is actually an innocent person's address found on the infected computer).
Of the spam that does not come from viruses, a high percentage try to hide where the email came from, so they are not going to have a valid return email address to bounce the spam to.
I finally quit bouncing the spam because it just took more time and did not seem to do any good.

Problems with framedyn.dll

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1164562422/

  • terrayusa - Where at microsoft can I get a download of their DLL files? My framedyn.dll which is microsoft's is in my system32, but has been corrupted as my Lexmark printer driver will not install, error message is "can not locate framedyn.dll"
said DLL is not on XPHome CD...........I've seached at msn for that DLL.......only get info result on it
  • pdr - I typed framedyn.dll in Google, and came up with the following link:
            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319114
Maybe the information and instructions there will help you to resolve your problem. If you decide to try out the instructions there, it is a good idea to print the whole page; I find that is easier than switching back and forth between different windows.
Let us know what happens, will you?
  • Tibor - It is my understanding that dll's may also get removed by programs that may be sharing the same dll if you uninstall one of the sharing programs.
Perhaps you might like to look for a free dll backup utility. I use DriverGuide Tool Kit (paid version) which can search for all your dll's on your system and make a backup to a chosen directory. It also has a feature that allows you to get updated versions of a given dll. Frankly, I haven't tried this aspect of the program so, can't comment on it. Having a backup folder of all your dll's makes very easy to replace a missing or corrupt dll. You just have to remember to run the program evrey time you install new software. Which reminds me I better get to it.
  • terrayusa - Thanks Peter,
Can't print as driver won't install, did all at support link you gave me, driver still wouldn't install.........going to reboot & try again, if it still won't install, then my framedyn.dll in dll cache must be corrupt also.........will let you know, what's weird is the scanner & fax of X1100 all in one Lexmark drivers installed, but no printer.
  • Ray - There is another thread on this same topic which was started by terrayusa. It is at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1164563044/ and may have more information about framedyn.dll.
I split this thread up because it had gone off on a different path than what the original question was about.
I have had problems with framedyn.dll too. I think that it started with me after a restore that I did with the backup program which came on my computer. For me, the framedyn.dll error came up during installation of the printer and was not because of an incomplete install. Evidently, the installation program uses framedyn.dll.
  • terrayusa - Thanks Ray, Sorry for late reply, got hit with a lot of snow, getting fire wood in & covered etc etc, Peter's google search above took me to how to repair the dll at MSN.........that worked, Lexmark Tech had to spend 2 hours, calling me back also, to finally get the install CD to work. Printer is up & running again. They didn't charge me even tho printer warranty is up.
I did a driver update site recommended by PC World in Sept.........while it was scanning my system, it wiped out drivers, my usb 200 gig 2nd hard drive & my lexmark were 2 of them of a few others, lexmark would not reinstall after that & started getting framedyn.dll error.
But the programs, SpyBot 1 of them, would open after I closed dll error. After I reinstalled framedyn.dll per msn tech instructions I received no more dll errors.
Sorry, I don't remember that driver update site.

Creating WinRescue XP Boot Disk

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1165772978/

  • hctim57 - There may be existing threads on this topic but I could not find them via SEARCH. Using WinRescue XP I am trying to make a boot disk. My laptop is diskette-less so I am assuming I can make a boot CD for XP using the D drive. I get prompted to format but get an error with no explanation. I bypass the format step and WinRescue starts backing up my registry. It completes and says the boot diskette is created. When I EXPLORE the D: I see nothing on the CD and 100% free space. Is this normal?
  • Ray - WinRescue makes a boot diskette (floppy disk). It does not make a boot CD because that requires a completely different procedure and operating system.
We have XP Recovery CD Maker which makes a boot CD for WinXP. Please try the trial version of XP Recovery CD Maker before purchasing because not all WinXP installations come with the necessary files for it to make a boot CD.

How to reformat drive

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1166047206/

  • thebates539 - I recently purchased a used, very good, computer. System is capable of handling,WindowsXP, but it has, Windows2000 as it's, OS. I have my purchased copy,CD, of, WindowsXP, but, I have lost, and/or, misplaced the information on how to reformat the harddrive and load my, WindowsXP. Can someone please help?
  • Ray - You don't have to reformat. You could just put the CD in and install Windows XP.

Please be aware that reformatting can cause a lot of problems and that you will lose everything on the computer. Only do so, if you know what you are doing.
If you are reformatting the drive that has the operating system on it, you will have to start your computer using another operating system. This can be done by using a boot floppy or boot CD (you can find how to make these online).
You can either delete all of the files on that drive or you can format it by using the DOS commant, "format c:". If you are formatting a different drive than C, replace c with the drive letter.
If you want to reformat a drive that does not have the operating system on it, you can open Windows Explorer (right click on the Start button and select Explore from the popup menu), in Windows Explorer right click on the drive that you want to reformat, and select Format from the popup menu.

MyComputer default options

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1166202610/

  • Bavarian29 - When clicking on any folder in My Computer the "Search" and "Open" choices show "Search" as top choice with "Open" below. Many times when clciking instead of right mouse button the next window is the Searh Window and I have to track back to get "Open" Have not been able to find how to reset the choices to what they used to be. Any help?
  • Ray - Open Windows Explorer and go to Folder Options in the Tools menu. Click on Folder Options.
That will open the Folder Options dialog. Click on the File Types tab. In the Registered file types list, go to the Folder item (it should be near the top). Click on it and then click on the Advanced button below in the Details section.
That will open the Edit File Type dialog. Select Open in the Actions list and then click on the Set Default button. That should put open back as the default.
Mine actually has Explore as the default and not Open.
In Windows Explorer you can tell which one is the default by seeing which one is in bold type on the right click popup menu. The default item (the one in bold type) is the one that is executed when that item is double clicked on.

How to stop websites

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1166540309/

  • gshibu5 - how to prevent a unwelcome site from opening automatically.
  • Ray - You can get free popup blockers from Yahoo, Google, and a number of other places.
  • gshibu5 - thanks!

Cookies 101

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1166114269/

  • gshibu5 - Is it safe to remove cookies from my computer.Suppose i remove the Yahoo cookie, what effect will it have. Can anyone explain the full role of cookies. Thanks
  • Ray - Cookies are mainly there for your convenience. The cookie tells the website things about you that it learned when you were at that website before. It keeps that information on your computer. That way the next time that you visit that website it will remember, for example, your name and greet you by your name.
This board uses cookies to remember your login and password, that way when you come to this board it can sign you in automatically. If you delete the cookie, you will have to enter your login and password.
A cookie does NOT (and cannot) go into your computer, hunt out private information and send that to someone else or share it with other websites.
The only disadvantage with cookies is that if you do not go back to a website, you really don't need its cookie and so its cookie is just sitting there on your computer wasting space.
Removing all of the cookies will mean that you will be treated by each website as if you were visiting it for the first time.
  • gshibu5 - thanks but suppose an undesirable site opens automatically whenever i log on and that sites cookie is there in my computer, in such case wether removal of the cookie will help to prevent the site from opening.
  • Ray - No, it does not work that way. It is not the cookie that causes the undesirable site to open automatically. A cookie is only used once the website is open and is only used on that website. Removing the cookie will not keep it from opening. But if you want to remove the cookie, go ahead and remove it.

Upgrading to USB 2.0

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167091414/

  • CharlesWhitlock - What is the easiest way to upgrade to USB 2.0?
  • usmaniv - try visiting this site: http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm. You will love the way they will allow you to get the latest drivers for USB.
  • Ray - You probably do not have to upgrade. If the device and ports handle USB2 (which all but very old ones should) then they will use the USB2 protocol. If not, they will use USB1.
There is a big difference in speed between USB1 and USB2, so if the device is creeping along really slow then it is probably using USB1.
If the device is made to use USB2 (which only old devices would not) and it is creeping along at USB1 speeds, then your ports may be USB1. If the ports are USB1, then you need to get USB2 ports. You can do this by purchasing a PCI card of USB2 ports and installing it in your computer. Then you can use the ports in it instead of the other USB1 ports on your computer.
  • CharlesWhitlock - Thanks for the help. I will check on getting a PCI card.

Unlimited Orange Broadband

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1164669104/

  • plonkeroo - For many years I have been using the Freeserve (> Wanadoo > Orange) Alcatel-based supposedly unlimited broadband connection in conjunction with the CiDial 'keep alive' programme.
Since Orange took over I have found that they are cutting off the connection every 15 minutes or so whenever I am using streaming music from the BBC. (The BBC use Real .RA formatted files and once the connection breaks whilst CiDial restores the internet connection there is no automatic recovery as far as the .RA files are concerned, just displays the Real error message.)
I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem with BBC streaming or with Orange/Wanadoo/Freeserve? Or can anyone recommend a more reliable ISP.
  • rayprice - the problem is with Orange although they will deny it. Their servers are overworked and one way to cure it is to cut you off. Dial-up customers often can't connect at all.
(They will even let you get your mail via another ISP, it's so bad.
            Try thinkbroadband.co.uk and compare ISP's
  • Ray - You might call Orange and ask them about it.
I once used a dialup service that was advertised as "unlimited". One day I found that I could not hook up with them. I called them and they told me that there was actually a limit to the amount of hours I could spend online with them each week. After that I made sure to keep under that amount of time which was no big deal.
I have purchased other services which claimed to provide unlimited bandwidth but were also limited (they claimed that the bandwidth was still unlimited but that I was overloading their servers which was not allowed).
I have found that the companies usually explain the problem and point you to some fine print stating that limitation, if you ask.
            Unlimited is seldom unlimited.

page switches without control

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167456555/

  • Hoopa - Problem with Windows XP reverting to previous screen. This happens when I have a "Favorites" file open with several tabs displayed across the top of the screen. If I open a link while in one of the tabs the computer soon auto reverts back to the tab page. The link is still open, but I have to click on it at the bottom of the screen to get back to it. This happens every minute or so. Most annoying. Any help in fixing this will be greatly appreciated.
  • Ray - I don't think that you can do anything about that except to close the previous screen (or maybe minimizing it would work).
I think that is more dependent on the website that the previous screen is showing. The website is refreshing itself and when it does so, it is moved to the front.
  • Hoopa - Thanks, Ray. Minimizing the previous screen does work! I had tried several combinations of tabbed browser settings under Tools, Internet Options, Tabs, Settings, but none solved the problem.

Explorer's Initial Location Changes

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167492472/

  • runnerduck - For some unknown reason the view on my Windows Explorer changed and I cannot get it back the way I want it.
It currently comes up with the My Documents folder opened. The way it use to open was with My Computer and my C drive expanded and all the others collapsed.
How do I get it back the way I had it. I've set the window the way I want it and gone into "Tools", "Folder Options" and tried pretty much everything but still it goes back to opening with My Documents expanded.
  • Ray - It all depends on what you use to open Windows Explorer. Most ways of opening Windows Explorer open it to a predetermined location which you cannot change.
The only way I know of to dictate where it opens is to make a shortcut to start Windows Explorer. In Issue #8 of our newsletter, Ray's Computer Tips (http://superwin.com/RaysComputerTips/Issue8.htm#tech), I explain how to make a shortcut which will open Windows Explorer to a specified location.

How do I delete desktop history

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167501432/

  • jimentertainment - There is a lot of old email search history stored on my Google and Internet Exploretr desktop. How do I delete it forever?
  • Ray - There are a lot of histories. I don't think any of them are called desktop history. I would assume that Google keeps its history in the registry. If you find where, you can delete it.
Our program, RegVac, has a StashVac which may remove them. If it doesn't, you can find where they are kept in the registry and have it remove them each time you run it.
Internet Explorer has a few histories, so it depends on which one you want to remove. From your description, my guess is that you want to remove the AutoComplete history (this is the popup which shows what you have previously typed when typing in a textbox). That is not an easy thing to remove because it is kept under lock and key in the Registry by Windows. About the only thing to do is to delete the item (select the item from the popup menu and then press the Delete button) when it pops up. Our program, RegVac, has an AutoComplete section which looks at all of the AutoComplete entries and makes textboxes for each one, so that you can delete them. You cannot just delete the whole section.
Unless Google or Internet Explorer has options in their settings where you can disable the History (I don't think that the Histories that you are referring to, do), you cannot just delete them forever. They always fill back up with what you type in their textboxes.

Windows XP shutdown problems

  • STET41 - I think i might have inadvertantly altered the registry on my pc. When shutting down WindowsXP my system would also shut down. However when i shut down now, windows closes, but then have to switch off my pc manually. Any suggestions!!
  • dlwolff0 - Check this Microsoft knowledge base article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313290/en-us This is the simplest case. Most times this problem is related to either power management or USB devices.

Task Manager off-screen

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167781421/

  • yosemite5156 - When I hit control Alt & del I get the Icon and name on the tool bar but not on my desktop screen. When I right click on it in the tool bar and close it out. it looks like it is coming from off the screen on the right side. Anyway I can get it back on screen?
  • dlwolff0 - Did you perhaps change from a high resolution setting to a lower resolution? Lower resolution spreads things out more, so something that was on the screen at high res might have got pushed off at a lower res. Also, when you right click on the tool bar tab, see if the move option is available.
  • yosemite5156 - The move optioon is there but I don't know how to use it cause I tried it to no avail Thanks I'll try the res and see if that works
  • yosemite5156 - Hey Thanks. I raised the res found it moved it and dropped the res back to normal every thing works great. AGAIN MY THANKS
  • Ray - To use the Move option, select Move from the popup menu and then press on one of the arrow keys (there are four arrow keys grouped together on your keyboard, one points up, one points down, one point to the left, and one points to the right). The window will move a short distance in the direction of the arrow key that you press. Press repeatedly to move it longer distances.
If you can't see the window that you are trying to move, this could get you in more trouble if you press a key that moves it further away.

Can't find moved software in Add/Remove Programs

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167851154/

  • explorer716 - I had some software programs on a FireLite Drive that I moved to my "C" drive. I moved them using software named, "Send Me" by Trogladite. With "Send Me", I moved them directly from the FireLite drive to the Programs file located on the "C" drive.
The moved software programs run just fine, but when I open Start:Control Panel:Add/Remove Programs the moved programs are not listed How do I get Windows to recognize these programs and include them in the Add/Remove file? This seems important in the event I decide to delete a program.
            I am running Windows XP.
            Your assistance will be appreciated.
  • Ray - The items in Add/Remove Programs are put there by each application's installation program when it is installed. The Add/Remove Programs item is simply an uninstall link to the installation program. Since you did not install the application, there is no need or way to uninstall it. Instead, you can just delete the files that were copied.
Of course, it is best to install and uninstall the application instead of copying and deleting it.
If you want the application to show up in the Add/Remove Programs list, you need to run the installation program for that application and install it.
  • explorer716 - Thank you very much. Is there a problem if I delete these programs and then install correctly?
  • Ray - No, if you copied the programs over, there is no problem in deleting them.

Deleting many email messages

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1167773634/

  • llennysr - I AM USING INCREDAMAIL XE FOR MY EMAIL. IT IS PROVIDED BY VERIZON, I THINK. IN ORDER TO CLEAR MY DELETIONS, I HAVE TO DELETE EACH ONE AND CLICK YES IN THE BOX THAT APPEARS. THAT'S A LOT OF CLICKING, ESPECIALLY OVER THE WEEKEND AND CAN RUN INTO THE HUNDREDS. IS THERE ANY WAY TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS? I APPRECIATE ANYTHING YOU CAN SUGGEST. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE
  • Ray - I don't know about Incredamail but most email programs allow you to select many messages at once and then delete them all. Try selecting the first message, going to the last message, holding down on the Shift button, and then selecting the last message. That should select every message from the first to the last. Then try clicking on the Delete button.
Another way to select multiple messages is to hold the Ctrl button down and click on each of the messages that you want selected. This only selects the ones that you click on.
  • usmaniv - I agree with RAY, as I am also an Incredimail user. You can have multiple options to select all messages.
Go to the respective folder: INBOX or SENT ITEMS etc, go to edit menu and select all,& delete, that way you can delete all messages, or you can select an individual message, and press shift key and using down or UP arrow you can select respective multiple messages, and of course using the ALT key, simply click on respective messages and delete them.
  • Bob Crawford - An easy way to delete all email messages is to highlight one of them and then click Ctrl+a which will highlight all of them, then click delete.
