Burning mp3s to audio CD
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159142230/
- phoneboy2 - I have been using windows media player 11.0 to rip mp3s with no problem.
What I need help with is if it is possible to burn mp3 were I could put several hours of
music on a audio cd in mp3 format.
Windows media player will burn mp3 to disk but it will only put about 25 mp3s ona disk and shows the disk as full. I have tried to burn the mp3s as a data disk as well but it will
not play.
Does any one know of any free or low cost software that will allow me to burn several hours of music to an audio disk in mp3 format?
Thanks so much.
- Ray - The audio CD format only reads WAV files so Media Player is converting the mp3s to wav when it burns them to a CD.
You can copy the mp3s directly to the CD as files and fit hours of music on a CD. This is called Digital CD. It is not the Audio CD format. The Digital CD format can only be played on your computer or other Digital CD compatible devices (most car CD players are Digital CD compatible), but not on a regular CD player.
- Robspace1 - I burn mp3s alot using MP10 and they will play anywhere-but the size is limited for cd-The answer is to use dvd media and put mp3s on them as they hold much more-Some of mine hold nearly 5 gbs of info-I only use dvds for video but I am thinking of doing what you want to do-There is a software trial that converts the mp3 to dvd format-I can;t remember the name of the program but I saw it on the VSO software site It is not one of their products but they have the link on their site-I think it is limited trial but I may check it out myself It would be nice to have 5 hrs. of music on a single disk-I believe it compresses the files first-Let us know if it works-
- Ray - I think the question has to do with Audio CDs. In other words, a Walkman that plays CDs or a CD player on a stereo. This is different than a DVD player, a CD player that is mp3 compatible, or the CD player on a computer. An Audio CD player will not play DVDs and will not play mp3. It only plays WAVs and so the mp3s were converted to WAVs which are much bigger than mp3 files.
There are newer CD players that play other formats other than Audio CD, but I believe the question here has to do with Audio CDs only.
backing up OE emails
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159863816/
- corandy - Is there a good utility for backing-up Outlook Express emails?
- Ray - All you have to do is make copies of the dbx files in the Outlook Express email directory to back up the emails. Do a search for *.dbx and you should find them.
- corandy - Ray, thanks for the info. I already knew about copying the dbx files but it is a bit more complicated than that. First you have to find the right dbx file, copy it, set up a new Outlook Express folder (e.g. "Resued Inbox"), find the storage location for "Rescued Inbox", rename the recovered Inbox dbx folder as "Rescued Inbox.dbx" and then copy this to the storage location of Rescued Inbox.
I was wondering if anybody wrote an backup utility program to do this?
- Ray - Just copy them to a new folder. Then when you need to restore them, copy them back or import them in. I am not sure why you would rename the file.
- corandy - Ray,the reason for renaming the files is that the rescued emails cannot directly be comingled in the same Inbox with any new emails. That is, the storage location for the Inbox will be confused if there are two identically named Inbox.dbx files.
Renaming prevents the loss of any new emails and also ensures that the new version knows about the rescued emails being copied over.
AFTER the rescued emails are recovered and in a separate folder they can then be moved using Outlook Express to any other folder in Outlook Express.
It is a pity that Microsoft didn't include an email backup utility.

Recovering from System Board Failure
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159736653/
- corandy - For the second time in 3.5 years, the system board on my Gateway notebook failed and it is not economical to fix it. I took out the hard drive and installed it in an USB hard drive enclosure with USB interface. I can now access this former hard drive on another WIN XP computer as an external hard drive. It shows up in the new computer as an "E:drive" under My Computer. I wish to salvage some data. However, when I go to E: Documents and Settings/ Administrator, I am not allowed access to the old drive's files. I presume that this is because I am not logged on as an Administrator to the E:drive's (password protected) Administrator Account. How can I log on to this E drive's administrator account? Or, how else can I get to the Administator's password protected files under the former hard drive? I have the password but without being able to log in to the old hard drive, I cannot enter it or remove it. I tried booting off of this E drive for it has a WIN XP Professional OP system, but it fails to boot - (I presume because an embedded BIOS code does not match that of the new computer?) Also is there a way to salvage Microsoft Office off the old drive? I have the original Office installation disks but will activation on my new computer be barred because of a different BIOS on the new computer
- dlwolff0 - This article would seem to apply to your situation.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881/en-us
As for as Microsoft Office, I would think you could install and activate it since the old computer no longer exists. You may have to contact Microsoft support for a new activation code though.
- corandy - Thanks, the microsoft article you recommended helped me solve the problem.
My old dead computer used WIN XP Professional and the new one has just WIN XP.
The MS article must be written for WIN XP Professional for in WIN XP there is no Advance Setting under Tools/Folder Options/View. Also in WIN XP, I was ONLY able to execute article's other instructions by doing so in SAFE MODE. In Safe Mode, I was able to change the OWNER of the old hard drive to my new computer's Administrator Account and now I can access (nearly) all the files on the old hard drive.
Wireless Router
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1160002210/
- dragonfly - To make my house wireless - is all I do is purchases a wireless router, (Belkin or Lynksys), - plug into my DSL/Ethrnt connection in the kitchen and use my new laptop in the bedroom? My new laptop is configured for wireless connectin and I have used it in a book store with no problems.
- dlwolff0 - Basically yes.
Issues may arise concerning distances, electronic interference from other sources and security.
Security may be the main one, unless you don't mind others tapping into your network and using your DSL connection.
Software that comes with the router should handle most issues, be sure to read all documents and configure it carefully.
Desktop Icons flashing
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159365018/
- Cenzo - I am running XP Pro SP2 fully updated with Symantec firewall and anti virus. My problem is that after starting Windows the first time, opening any folder and then closing it, all my desktop Icons disappear than slowly re-appear. This only happens once, the rest of the time opening and closing of folders has no effect on the desktop until the next time I re-start the system. It's not that it's causing a problem it's just annoying the hell out of me. LOL! I don't think it's my Video card, as I am running an Invida card with 256mb ddr ram and the latest drivers. What do you guys/gals think?
- dlwolff0 - I see somewhat similar behaviour, everytime I boot my computer.
My APC UPS software is unable to connect with the power supply for a period of time, due to all the activity by other programs at startup.
When it is finally able to connect, all the desktop icons flash, then things proceed normally.
Therefore, I think your problem is similar to mine, the processor is dealing with a temporary overload and when it is finished, the desktop is "reset".
- Cenzo - Thanks for the input!
System repeatedly reboots without warning
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1160491928/
- horsepro - This happens sometimes for hours at a time it just keeps rebooting and doing a disk scan. It will then start normally and I can work sometimes for hours and sometimes it will immediately start the reboot process all over again.
- Ray - It sounds like a bad power supply to me. A bad power supply will just shut the computer off and then it will go through the normal startup process (since it was shut off abruptly, a scan is done).
The easiest way to check for a bad power supply is to replace it and see if that solves the problem. The power supply is a part of your computer (the box that has a fan in it on the back of your computer) and costs around $50. They do come in different sizes so make sure the one you buy will work on your computer (ask the people at the parts store). Too big is usually OK, but too small is not.
Computer history
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1160757293/
- imabowler68 - How do i delete my computer history ? apart from. Doing it by hand, deleting one at a time which my sister said i should do, It is very time consuming, or buying one of these history cleaners which they say ' will stop hackers getting at you web surfing, and knowing your details, ( Just a learner at the computing )
- Ray - There are many history lists on your computer. The easiest thing to do is buy a program, like our A1Click Ultra PC Cleaner (http://superwin.com/a1clean.htm) that will clean those lists.
The other alternative is to do some research, find out where all of those lists are, and delete them. The lists are kept both in the registry and on your hard drive.
Unless you have something to hide, there really is no need to delete the history lists.
- imabowler68 - Thank you Mr Ray.
I have purchased your A1 ULTRA CLEANER already and use it regularly, ( It's 'Majic' )
The history I was referring to, appears down the side of your page, when you click the wee green clock, next to the yellow favourites, and that is what i have been deleting one by one, which takes ages to do depending what you have been looking at, or searching for
Because i was told Hackers can get information about you, via this list !
No Sir, nothing to hide, I am just an elderly lady brushing up on my computing, and just need a bit of help, or reassurance.
- dlwolff0 - You can control this list by accessing Internet Options.
This is under tools on your Internet Explorer tool bar.
You can set the number of days that will be saved on the history list before it will be deleted by Windows. Simply choose 0 or 1 to keep this list under control.
Zero as choice will clear this list when you close Internet Explorer. There is a button also that clears all the currently saved history.
- imabowler68 - Oh! THANK YOU so much dlwolffo for taking the time to answer my queery,
I am just a learner at this computing, but i am slowly getting there.
So many ' Clicks, wiggits, and digits, to learn about. '
This is a handy site to ask for Help.
It will maybe save me shouting HELP to my Grandson, and him saying:- oh! no 'not again' lol
- Ray - A1Click does clean that out but you have to either run Remove Tracks (which I don't neccessarily recommend) or check it (Internet History) in Cleaner Settings and then run Run Settings.
About the only thing that Hackers would get from the History list is where you have been. I don't think that they could get the information that you entered in any of the pages.
If you have a firewall installed on your computer, hackers should not be able to get to the History list anyway.
You can select a day in History and delete it which would delete everything in that day. You can also delete whole folders this way in History. You don't have to select each website and delete them individually.
- imabowler68 - THANK YOU, Mr Ray.
( I have a firewall, your comment on it has also reassured me. ) Everything seems to be fine now.
This is a great place for computing advice!
OE removed access to jpg's sent to me
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1160566899/
- houseplant - "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments" at least that is what the message header says on all my e-mails that have jpg attachments on them. I can view the pictures in the body of the e-mail, but cannot save or print them. The access to them is grayed out. I searched the help file, but to no avail. Can anyone help me?
- Ray - That is a setting in OE. Even though OE implies that it checks the attachments to see if they are a virus, they are not. All attachments are disabled.
The setting is in the Tools menu of OE. Click on Options which will open the Options box. Go to the Security tab and uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" checkbox. That will take care of your problem.
- houseplant - Thank you so much. Such an easy fix for such a perplexing problem!
XP does not Shutdown
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159722979/
- yosemite5156 - How do I det my computer to shut down. Now that I upgraded to win Xp from Win98 my computer tells me that it is safe to turn off computer. With win98 it sut down automaticly.
- dlwolff0 - Check this Microsoft knowledge base article. One of the solutions should work for your computer.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810903/en-us
- rfmizell - Try hitting CONT-ALT-DEL simultaneoously and I think you will find that some process is not shutting down. If this is the case investigate to see why?
- pdr - This is a good suggestion:
"Try hitting CONT-ALT-DEL simultaneoously and I think you will find that some process is not shutting down. If this is the case investigate to see why?"
This brings up the Task Manager. If you click on the Processes Tab, you will see all the programs and servces that are running on your computer. Now this is what I did to isolate the program that was giving me the same problem recently.
Check the box "Show processes from all users". Highlight one of the programs that you recognize, and do "End Process." Mark it down on a piece of paper.
Now go to Shutdown, Restart.
If the computer does NOT Restart properly, you know that the program you "Ended" is not the one giving you the problem -- that is, one of the programs still running is the problematic one.
Keep on repeating this until you get to the point that the computer DOES restart, right after you have "Ended" a process.
Now, you can verify. Ctrl-Alt-Del (to get the Task Manager), go to the program that you suspect, End it, and try to restart. If the shutdown works properly, then that is your key.
What I did, until I was able to get help from the developer of the particular program at issue, was the go the Ctrl-Alt-Del, End Process, Shutdown route each time I wanted to Shutdown. Boring, but I do prefer not having to "pull the plug". The developer did have a solution, by the way, so it is no longer an issue.
Hope that this helps.
- yosemite5156 - Great That worked thanks!
authenticity of web page
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1160417296/
- billrobb - I recently received an e-mail purporting to be from PayPal. I haven't used them at least in 5 years if at all, and certainly did not order the phone. The name is not me either. Should I respond to t his e-mail and give any personal information? How can I tell if this is authentic?
Dear PayPal Member,
This email confirms that you have paid LWP ELECTRONICS (sales@lwpelectronics.com) $274.99 USD using PayPal.
This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as "PAYPAL LWPELECTRONICS*".
- Ray - NO, YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT RESPOND TO THE EMAIL. It is a scam. All they want is your credit card number and information so that they can charge your card and ruin your credit.
If you think it is legitimate and you want to check it out, do not use the links in the email. Instead, open your browser, go to www.paypal.com and log into your account. You will probably see that there is no charge or activity.
You can also look at the links in the email and see that they do not link to paypal.com.
- Cassandra - This is very standard phishing. DO NOT RESPOND TO IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Either delete it or forward it to abuse@paypal.com and then delete it. Among the ways you can know that it isn't authentic is the salutation, "Dear PayPal Member". PayPal themselves point out that they always use the member's username as a salutation, just because of this problem.
Since you obviously don't have a lot of experience with this kind of scam, I would recommend that you use some kind of software which helps to protect you from them. Pegasus Mail is an excellent free email client which provides some phishing protection. The advertisements for Symantec's Internet Security Suite 2007 also advertise protection, but I know nothing else about that program.
- halfquid - If the email contains a hyperlink...DO NOT CLICK IT!. Also, there is a free program named..."Calling ID" download it and install. It will tell you if a URL is valid for the address contained. That way if you pass your mouse over a hyperlink, it will advise you whether or not that link is valid.
- Ray - PayPal also has an Internet Explorer add on that is supposed to tell you if links to it are valid or not. It is free. I just consider all emails like that from PayPal as frauds (because they usually are).
- m0mmad - Most places like that have an email address to forward those to and will let you know if they are valid. For paypal, ebay and many banks it is SPOOF@Paypal.com spoof@ebay and spoof @ yourbank.com or .net
Search doesn't work

- shman - I am using Windows XP Sp2 and whenever I try to do a search I get the following: Runtime error
Program: C\windows\explorer.exe
abnormal program termination.
Then the destop icons dissappear for a few seconds. Does anyone know what the problem is? Any help will be appreciated.
- dlwolff0 - Explorer.exe is shutting down for some reason, when you try to search.
You are probably missing a required dll or some other file required to run the search program.
I would try running the System File Checker utility to see if a required file is missing or corrupted. Type sfc /scannow into the Start\Run box [note the blank space between sfc and the /].
- shman - I tried running sfc but to no evail I still get the same thing Thanks
- shman - dolwolffo - since you were the only one who tried to help me I wanted to let you know how the problem was solved. I downloaded a program from nirsoft call ShellExt.exe and ran it and isolated the offended program which was a utility on my computer called the free download manager. I appreciate your time in trying to help me.
- dlwolff0 - Thanks for the information.
Free programs can cause a lot of problems, can't they?
Updating Super Win Software

- rarrows - I currently use A1, Regvac, Winrescue: To update I go to the website and click download for each program and then check the current version. Is there a better way?
- Ray - The latest versions of RegVac and A1Click now have update links in them. It is under the Help menu of RegVac and under the Order menu of A1Click. It says, Check for Updates. When you click on Check for Updates, it will check with our website and see if there is a more recent version. If so, it will take you to the Registered Users section to download the latest version.
You will need to close the program before you install the newer version.
Sonic Record Now Deluxe v 7 question
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1161266923/
- Pat Oelslager - I have this Sonic Record Now Deluxe V7, I can copy files to a cd and burn them, my problem is it is Read Only, you can add more files to the cd, but you cant go in to any of those files and make corrections or add or erase anything,Is there a way to keep these files open? Say I have files for my books, a childrens file, a anmals and pet, or fiction, If I want to add anything I have to make another file, I can't go back into say the childrens file and add or make correction. This is very frustrating, because as I get more info I need to get back into those files and not make a new file. The Sonic program that I had with my old computer,Win ME, let you leave the files open ,it was much simpler. Any Suggestion, thanks,Pat
- Ray - That is the way CDs have always been. It is not theoretically possible to change a file on a CD without rewriting the whole thing. Some CD burning programs make it seem like they are changing the file but what they actually do is close off the old content of the CD and write a whole new section (with the old and the new in it). These sections are called sessions. A CD can contain many old sessions on it but only the most recent session is visible. CD burners cannot go in and just rewrite part of the session. It has to write the entire session.
There is one exception to all of what I just said. It is packet writing. Two old standards of the packet format are Packet CD and Direct CD. Packet format writes little sessions all over the CD and then rewrites the individual sessions. With packet writing you can copy files directly to the CD and change them as much as you want. In order to use packet writing the CD must first be formatted by the packet software.
Maybe the Sonic program that you had before had some type of packet writing in it, but I have never heard of anything like that.
Information on Services
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1161612581/
- sarvet - Does any one have a good resource (book or web site) that describes the services in WIN 2OOO ? I have been out of country for sometime and my daughter allowed her "computer know-it-all" boy friend to muck around with hers when it was running slow. He changed the properties of several services from mannual to automatic and vise versa. Some are not starting and some seem to be running without purpose. I would like to know generally what the default settings are for the various services.
- Cassandra - There are a lot of sites which give the defaults and discuss the services.
http://labmice.techtarget.com/articles/win2000services.htm claims to give the defaults, and http://www.governmentsecurity.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=1480 gives a lot of descriptions.
Backing Up the Registry
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1161456670/
- JohnNM - I've searched the MS Knowledge base until I'm blue in the face. Entering the phrase "Registry Backup" and the like leads absolutely nowhere. In as much as we are so frequently directed to "Backup your Registry before proceeding ..." etc., why doesn't Microsoft clearly show us how.
So, the question is, 'How do we back up the registry to a safe place - such as an externa Hard Drive, or even a folder in a local drive, other than C:\?
I'd certainly appreciate learning how to do it.
- Ray - Backing up the registry used to be possible in earlier versions of Windows, but with Windows NT, 2000, XP, and now Vista, it takes special processes to backup the registry which are not available to the Windows user. The only way in Windows to backup the registry is to use System Restore and create a Restore Point. That cannot be backed up to another drive.
We have WinRescue which can backup the registry to any location. It can also do some other things with the registry that System Restore cannot do. Find more information about WinRescue XP at http://superwin.com/rescuexp.htm.
- Cassandra - One of my ideas was indeed RegEdit. I wouldn't want to use it as a backup, but since I can't figure out many other uses for the setting to import or export the entire registry, I assume that that's what MS intended that function to be used for. (I can actually think of one other use, but it's irrelevant here.)
My other idea, which I do myself, is to use the Windows backup utility (ntbackup.exe on Win2000) to make a backup of the "system state" only on another drive. (I don't think that there's a way to use it to back up the registry only. It's more like creating a system restore point, I think.) Even though I do it, I can see two big disadvantages to it:
1. I don't see why one should have to restore all of one's boot files just to fix a registry problem. It looks to me like looking for trouble.
2. The backup is a lot bigger than the registry alone. My registry (my config folder, really) is about 24MB, but my SysState.bkf is 230MB! Just for comparison, I just used the backup gadget of RegVac, which I imagine is similar or identical to that of WinRescue, to make a registry backup, and it's about 21 MB. Also, Ray's gadget is a lot faster: about 3 or 4 seconds for RegVac, vs. about 5 minutes for ntbackup.
At least MS definitely considers this a registry backup. See the paragraph "Manual steps to back up the whole registry" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756 .
By the way, John, it's well known that the search gadget for the MS KB is, um, unhelpful. If you type the word "Microsoft" followed by the words you really want into Google, (producing , for example, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=microsoft+back+up+registry ), the knowledge base article you need will often be one of the first results. It's funny that the only way to use the MS KB efficiently is by using their arch-enemy's search tool, but that's the way it is.
- Ray - I was thinking mainly WinXP.
WinNT and Win2000 does have ntbackup.exe. I don't think WinXP has it (I could not find it on my computer) and I doubt that WinVista will have it either.
An export from RegEdit is not a backup and should not be used as a backup for a few reasons.
One is that the file produced by an export is a completely different format (and much bigger) than the registry files. So if Windows crashes, you cannot just replace the registry files with the export file.
You also cannot restore the export unless regedit is able to run because it is actually regedit that reenters the data from an export into the registry. So unless Windows can start and run regedit, the export file will do you no good.
Yet another problem is that restoring an export file does not delete any of the old entries in the registry. So if a virus or bad entries were installed in the registry, restoring an export file will do no good.
About all that an export file is good for is if you deleted something in the registry and need to get it back.

I did go and try Worldwind. It starts out with a picture of the earth like Google Earth does but that seems to be where the similarities end. Navigating the earth is harder in the NASA version. There are instructional videos on Wikipedia which tell how to use the program but when I tried to view them it froze up at 73% and so I never could watch it. I am sure that they would have helped me.
It does seem to have images from many satellites and not just one but they don't seem to have the resolution that Google Earth has. I am sure that they show more than what Google Earth shows but I could not figure it out.
It also allows you to cruise the Moon and a few planets, like Venus.
