Winantivirus pro

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1156252898/

  • rayvilla - I have a friend who unfortunately downloaded and installed Winantivirus pro. I have been able to get rid of most of the program. I've been into the registry and removed every reference to the program; have run Adaware: have run an on-line virus checker (TrendMicro) and run Spybot also. Reinstalled the original antiVirus program (AVG) and everything has been working OK for the last month. However, there is an icon in Control Panel that I can't remove. Any suggestions??
  • Ray - Tell us about the icon. What is it? Where is it in Control Panel?
  • rayvilla - I did reply but must have put in the wrong place. The icon is a biscuit or donut shaped picture and it is the last item in the control panel. When you pass the cursor over it, the message reads "Winantivirus pro is active on your system" If you right click on the icon you get choice of "Open" or "Create Shortcut"
  • Ray - There should be a coresponding *.cpl file in the Windows\System32 folder for that item. Each item in the Control Panel has a cpl file, so if you find the right one and remove it, it should remove its item from the Control Panel. Instead of deleting the file, I would rename it to have a different extension, just in case you didn't get the right one. Once you have confirmed that it is the right one, you can delete it.
  • rayvilla - SUCCESS !!! Firstly I looked for the CPL file and could not see anything that seemed to refer to Winantivirus Pro. The only one that appeared vaguely similar was a file called AV.CPL. I renamed that xxxxav.cpl, shut the computer down for 30 seconds, rebooted but the icon was still in Control Panel. Decided to remove the file altogether by moving it to a floppy. Hey, presto, that did the trick. Thanks very much for your assistance.
  • Ray - Good. I am glad that worked.
I should have said to rename the file so that it had a different extension, not cpl. The Control Panel looks for all of the cpl files and lists them.

Reply in OE not working

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1157140721/

  • jsj54 - I am unable to reply to messages in my outlook express. I can send new messages and receive messages but can't reply. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Ray - What happens when you reply to a message?
  • jsj54 - The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'buddysesf@accessky.net'. Subject 'Re: The house that golf built', Account: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relaying mail to accessky.net is not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
  • Ray - It could be a bad email address.
If it does that with every email, no matter what email address it is sent to, it is probably a problem with your internet provider, the smtp server (if it is different than your internet provider), or your settings for smtp. Call your internet provider and ask them about it. They should be able to fix it.

previous internet browsing

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1156023178/

  • billrobb - THere is a way in which yu can scroll down to see the web sites you have gone to in the current session. How do I access? thanks
  • dlwolff0 - On the address bar, click the arrowhead on the right side of the address box. This should give you a drop down list of the sites you have visited for whatever period that you chose in the Internet properties for Internet Explorer.
Alternatively, click on the history icon in the tool bar above which will open a sidebar giving the same information..
  • billrobb - I see the green arrow to the right of the address bar (on the end of it) but clicking it on just gives me the address I'm working on (this site). When I click on history I do get a list. Terrific, thanks
  • dlwolff0 - Just for clarification, I was referring to the blue drop down arrow inside the box, not the green arrow outside it.

turn off/restart problem

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1156098298/

  • danne404 - I have a Presario 6450NX compaq comp.with win.XP SP2 with one bothersome problem that I have been unable to correct and that is "turn off computer" either turnoff or restart. What happens is when I click on turnoff or restart the right light goes off but the left light stays on and of course the monitor.I am assuming the right light indicates the comp.status.The only way to shut down completely is to push the on/off button on the face of the comp.I know this is no big deal but it really bugs me.I might mention that every so often when I press the turnoff button it operates as is suppose to;but not very often. One other thing is when I use my goback program upon completion it turns the comp. off and restarts it. . By this I mean that the monitor is left with the screen showing Windows is shutting down.If I turn off thr monitor and then turn it back on the same image is there.Hope you can help as I have tried a number of places and no response.Thak You Dan
  • quinland - I have had a similar problem, and have no answer to what causes it. I have used a program from Steve Gibson, wizmo.exe, a program that runs a number of options, including a shutdown module that overrides Windows XP (and other versions) shutdown delays.
You can find the program at www.grc.com.
If this method does not work, I would check for a hardware problem.
  • gmanry - You may be encountering a stop error at shutdown, this will cause the computer to hang and not complete its shutdown process.
If you recently installed a new piece of hardware or drivers are corrupted or out of date, a stop error can occur. Also look to any programs like spyware/virus suites that may be having problems shutting down.
You can use msconfig (Start, run, "msconfig," encter) to shut down your start-up programs and see if the problem clears, then reactivate one at a time till you isolate the problem program.
            Hope this helps

boot.ini invalid

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1157359347/

  • tonyfitz7 - Got infected last week by a virus which "ate" all my desktop icons one by one...very surreal. Now I get "boot.ini invalid" on start-up but it also says "File recovered from C:\\Windows...." and the system continues correctly. I'm running XP and have a recovery disk but am worried that if I start this up I'll have to recreate everything ...
            Any ideas/tips?
            Thanks.
  • dlwolff0 - If you type msconfig in the start\run box, you can edit boot.ini.
Typically boot.ini will have the following lines for a system running a single operating system with Windows on the first partition of your hard drive:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
    [operating system]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"/fastdetect/No Execute=OptIn

The 30 is the number of seconds delay before executing, you can set this to whatever you want. If you are running XP Home, you will need to put it in place of the one shown.
After you enter the new boot.ini, click the "Check all boot paths" button and Windows will tell you if the entry is valid for your system.
If it says it isn't valid, then hit the cancel button and you will return to your current condition.
If you have a Windows XP disk [not a recovery disk, but the install disk], then Microsoft recommends this procedure:

Save Target As missing

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1156992432/

  • silvrstreek - I've noticed that I no longer have the option "Save Target As" when I right-click on a link in IE6. It's there but it is faded out. Would anyone know how to correct this. I have no idea when it started doing this nor would I know where to begin to look.
  • dlwolff0 - Take a look at this knowledge base article. It seems to be a permissions problem caused by the content advisor.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176316/en-us
  • silvrstreek - Thank you for your help. That was the issue. There are so many settings it's hard to remember them all. Again, thank you very much.

A1 Cleaner does not remove all items

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1157460406/

  • GentleGiant - After running Clean PC, Remove Traces and Run Cleaner Settings, I ran Window Washer. This latter program removed 10.5MB from the IE Cache.
What please should I do to set A1 Cleaner to remove this too?
  • Ray - You should uncheck the Time Buffer in Cleaner Settings. When the Time Buffer is checked, A1Click only removes items older than 7 days. This is to protect you from removing items that you need. If you do not want that, uncheck it.
  • GentleGiant - Thanks for the prompt advice Ray!

Hidden Folders in Outlook Express

  • engilf - How to set Outlook Express so that all folders are constantly visible. Had this until I recently installed a new computer. Can't find instructions for this inside the program.
  • Laverne - Open OE. Click View > Layout > put checkmark in Folder List.

  • little77mom3 - Hi. I am a novice pc user, need to know what programs to purchase to keep registry free of errors, and keep pc hard drive free of junk. thanks. I am buying a new pc .

Email Stripper

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1157979543/

  • suepollock - I receive a large number of email messages that are great and I like to share them with our ministry friends. However, many are formatted and have the >> beginning each line. I have spent literally hours removing these characters manually but stumbled across a "free" program that would remove them for me through cut and paste. Having three computer crashes in less than seven days, I had all of my programs backed-up with the exception of this program. Free programs I don't usually back-up but I will in the future. The name was similar to "Clean" or "Cleaner." I have Googled for help but came up empty each time. Are any of you famaliar with this program and the link where I could re-download? And if someone can share the link and you haven't used it, it is a great little tool! Thanks for any help.
  • pirgnori - Try http://www.jd-software.com/eClean2000/index.html or http://www.customsolutions.us/cleanup/support.htm. Both are excellent programs to clean up e-mail.
  • Miracle - You'll find email stripper at http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm

Backup of Patches and Hotfixes!

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1158521466/

  • onething - Speaking of backups, what about the all megabytes of patches and hotfixes that have to be downloaded from Microsoft to ensure to the security of its operating system? If Windows is reinstalled all of those will be lost.
Can WinRescue make a backup of downloaded Windows system files? (and how do you find out where they all are, once installed?)
  • Ray - Yes, all of them will be lost but they will automatically be redownloaded again too without the ones that are discontinued.
Yes, of course, you can back them up with WinRescue. They are in the Windows directory and begin with a $NTUninstall.

HP Pavillion not sleeping soundly

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159043697/

  • Pat Oelslager - I have Win XP, when the computer is idle, it keeps shutting off and in a few seconds it comes back on , the blue light goes out and the monitor and both printers shut down, then the blue light comes back on and it all starts back up again. It does this on a regular basic. I talked to HP(or rather tried to talk to HP, but the English is really bad), the man said it may be my battery pack and surge protector. That I need to unplug everything and plug in to the wall. Then buy one of HP surge protectors. this one is only a few months old and I paid $60. for it. Do you think it is something else, maybe just a glitch in the computer.Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.Pat
  • Ray - I noticed the other day that my computer (which is an HP Pavilion too) did the same thing. I don't think that it usually does that though. Something is waking it up. It sounds like the tech people at HP thought it was a surge that was waking it up. It could also be other things like the mouse or movement in the room.
I just had the RAM memory chips go bad on mine and I think it was because I always let the computer go idle like that. Now I try to put the computer in Hibernation when I know that I am not going to be around for a while.
You can change what your computer does when it is idle in the Power Options section of the Control Panel. By default it is set to go into System Standby after 10 minutes of inactivity. When it is in this state, it still is monitoring certain things like the mouse and keyboard, so it is not completely shut down. System Hibernates is more of a complete shutdown and requires pushing the On/Off button to start back up (instead of moving the mouse or pressing a key), but you should not have a problem with the computer coming back on when it is not supposed to. To change it, set System standby to Never and System hibernates to After 10 mins.

AOL troubles

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159103614/

  • ruffian9 - For a couple of months now I have been unable to sign on to AOL in any way other than as "guest". The AOL sign-on screen normally offer three fields:
            1. Name - offering a choice of your screen names, Guest and New User
            2. Password
            3. Location
After a crash a few months ago the sign-on screen looked the same but only offered two fields:
            1. Name - offering a choice of nothing other than "Guest", "New User" or "Existing member". No sign of registered screen names.
            2. Location
            N.B.: No Password field!
After lengthy discussions with AOL so-called technical experts (who can do no more than read from their book of answers), their only suggestion was: reformat your hard drive - as for then signing on they could give no guarantee that I wouldn't then have to open a new account with a lot of hassle trying to get unexpired subscription back.
So I just keep on signing in as guest. I can also use AOL Dialler, connect to IE6 and go to www.aol.co.uk and then sign in, using my existing screen names and passwords.
I have repeatedly asked AOL where the corrupt identifier file is - but they won't tell me.
  • Ray - Have you tried running RegVac? In the past RegVac has been able to solve some AOL problems.
Surely, you have tried uninstalling AOL and then reinstalling it.
Reformatting the harddrive is just an easy way out for the tech people (that way they don't have to find the problem).
  • ruffian9 - Thanks, Ray. I've uninstalled and re-installed AOL repeatedly - no good. I'm running Windows 98SE and, in the past several years on broadband, I've never had any serious AOL problem before. Uninstalling AOL only removes the AOL files in the Programs folder - it leaves most of AOL behind in Windows->All users and various other places. If I delete all that lot of common files, I don't know where I'll end up!
  • Ray - Like I said, try running RegVac. You just need to run it in the Novice mode and hopefully, it will fix that. The trial version is free and is fully functional.

http error 403

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159233338/

  • deathbringer - Could someone give me some suggestions to solving the "http error 403" problem?
When I go to www.ubs.com (on my laptop, wireless connection to the Internet) and try to click on "USA Client Account Access", I get "http error 403". If I click on "e-banking in Switzerland", which is right underneath "http error 403", I have no problem accessing the "e-banking in Switzerland" web page. But the "USA Client Account Access" web page? Forget it. I get "http error 403" every time I try to access that web page.
My wife's computer, right next to my laptop, Has no problem accessing the "USA Client Account Access" web page. Her computer has a wired (cable) Internet connection.
Anybody know what is going on here.
  • Ray - http://www.checkupdown.com/status/E403.html has a good explanation of "http error 403"
Maybe it has to do with how you are connecting up to the internet.

WinRescue XP without diskette drive

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1159120222/

  • onisdad - I have a laptop that does not have a diskette drive. Should I install WinRescue XP anf if so would I loose any critical functionality?
  • Ray - Many people install and use WinRescue XP on a computer that does not have a diskette drive.
We have XP Recovery CD Maker which can be used to make a boot CD in place of the boot diskette.
  • onisdad - Would I be able to make a boot CD using XP Recovery CD Maker?
    - I do not have a retail copy of Windows XP. What I have is a Recovery CD provided by the vendor (HP).
    - I do have a I386 folder within C:\WINDOWS
  • Ray - If you have an i386 folder in the Windows folder (the i386 folders in subfolders of Windows do not count), it should work.
A Recovery CD will not help unless it has the i386 folder in it. If it does or you have the WinXP CD (I know you don't but I am saying this for everyone else) and you do not have the above mentioned i386 folder in Windows, you can copy the i386 folder from the CD to Windows directory.
The best way to find out if you can make an XP Recovery CD is to download the trial version and make one. If you don't get errors during the burn of the CD, it worked.
  • onisdad - Thank you. I'll give it a try.

  • Freeware - Slim Jim - If you've got plenty of time to burn, check out this helpful website.... http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-freeware-utilities/index.html It lists over 450 freeware utilities, separated into about 39 categories for easy reference and to help you find what you're looking for.....SlimJim
  • How Stuff Works - gshibu5 - I often visits a very usefull site- How Stuffs Work. Its really a wonderfull site with details of almost anything you want to know, categorised under various heads. For example to know how nuclear bombs work just past this add : http://science.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-bomb.htm
  • or-live.com - Ray - Here is a website for viewing surgeries - http://www.or-live.com
If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition which requires surgery, this is a good website to go to and find your surgery or newer surgeries to correct your condition. The video that I watched was an hour long and spent most of the time explaining the surgery in lecture style. This website is for doctors and so the terminology is technical. They explained the different problems and why their surgical procedure is better.
This website has live presentations of surgical procedures (what is usually live is the lecture and not the surgery itself) and archived live presentations (which really are not live). Many of these presentations seem to be used to promote new ways of doing certain surgeries.
  • Learn how to draw - Ray - If you want to learn how to draw, http://www.drawspace.com is the place to go. This website is full of lessons on the different aspects and levels of drawing.
