cursor jumps

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1149000718/

  • maeleoin - My cursor will sometimes jump to some unintended location while I am moving it. I have inadvertently closed windows before realizing that the cursor had jumped from a location in the document to the "X" in the upper right hand corner.
  • Ray - I would suspect the problem to be with the mouse especially if it is wireless. Cheap wireless mouses will do that from interference or when the battery is low.
  • ejog - What type of mouse? What Operating System?
I had similar problems with a Microsoft mouse, finally had to discard the mouse. I believe it to be the fact that the grandchildren continually banged it on the desk out of habit because their mouse always had a dirty ball, trouble was mine was optical.
I purchased a Logitech wireless, Very pleased with the performance. But has a problem when booting from a Acronis True Image CD, the drivers are not available, I use a cheap PS/2 mouse when I take a disk image.
  • John Burke - I am using w98 and have the same problem. I changed the mouse twice and it didn't make any difference. I still have the problem and guess I will till I get a new computer.
  • Ray - I have had a Logitech wireless mouse and it has worked very well for me. Before that I had purchased a cheap wireless and it had all kinds of problems.
To me it seems that there are only two possible sources for that problem: the mouse or the motherboard. A bad motherboard usually acts differently (like the mouse not working at all) but since you have tried two different mice and the problem still exists, that only leaves the motherboard.
Maybe someone else knows more about this. If they do, please jump in at anytime.
  • LFTTRN2 - We are using IBM computers and mouses where I work. I have a Logitec TrackBall and we all have the same problem. Seems to jump back when you are trying to select a sentance and you only get part of it. Thought it might be something to do with Office 2003.
  • dlwolff0 - This could be a software problem. Nearly all mouse software has a setting to make it jump to a default location.
Perhaps the software has become corrupted, or you may have the wrong software installed. Windows treats everything as a Microsoft mouse unless you install other software.
  • triuno - I have a Logitech Laser wireless mouse. I had the same problem to start with: It says that the mouse controller ie the receiver can be fitted to an USB port. Can and can, but the drivers are not good so it did precisely what you are describing. Then I put it as a PS2 mouse with normal inlet and voila it works just perfect! Have a nice day.
  • Ray - I have a Logitech Laser wireless mouse and it is hooked in on USB and it has no problem.
There are two different USB formats the old USB1 (often just called USB) and the new USB2 (sometimes also called USB but usually somewhere they mention the 2 part). They use the same connection but a USB1 is much, much slower than USB2. Maybe your mouse is expecting USB2 and you have it hooked into a USB1 port on your computer. This would cause the data exchange to be much slower and I can see how it would cause the cursor to jump.
PS2 is the normal round connection for the mouse. You can get a little connector that goes from the USB to PS2 so that you can connect the mouse into the normal mouse port. I take it that is how triuno connected it into the PS2 port.

Disappearing toolbar icons

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1151910991/

  • sgt - Would anyone know why a few of my icons have disappeared from my toolbar. I've set them to 'always show' and they suddenly disappeared???
  • Jogor - Have you rebooted since this occurred?
  • dlwolff0 - The default for WinXP is to hide unused icons.
Even if you have them marked to always show, they will disappear after a set time unless you have used them.
If you do not want this to happen, go to the control panel and open Taskbar and Start menu. Uncheck the box that says "hide inactive icons" and click apply at the bottom of the window.

Printer on a network

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153083262/

  • Chenry - I don't know how to connect my laptop to the printer of my computer.
XP 2 and HP deskjet 6122
Anyone here who can help me?
  • dlwolff0 - Are the laptop and desktop networked and you want to share the printer? Or are you unsure how to physically connect the laptop and printer?
  • Chenry - They are networked. My laptop is wireless connected to my router. My main computer has printersharing enabled, but my laptop seems to be unable to find the printer.
  • dlwolff0 - A good explanation of how to setup printer sharing between your desktop and laptop is given in this forum discussion. http://laptopmag.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=31&PN=1 Basically you have to add a printer to your laptop, which will actually be the printer share enabled on the desktop.
  • Chenry - Thank you wolff. That was a most enlightning link. After carefully doing all these steps however, my laptop still does not come up with a printer. Even the search function on the HP printer CD couldn't find a printer.
Both machines are running XP Pro SP2. It's a HP 6122 deskjet printer. I'm now going to check if all the services are in the default position.
  • Ray - I never had much success with using a printer through a network especially if I have to go through another computer to get to it (in other words, the printer is hooked directly to a computer and not the network). I do have a printer now that is hooked into a router with an ethernet cable and it is accessible to all of the computers on the network.
  • dlwolff0 - Ray's setup is the default for most networks.
It is the simplest solution if you are still having problems.
  • Bayoubum26 - Sharing a HP printer on a network can be a sticky item.. HP has a tendency to make good products and lousy drivers. On my 2110 all in one I had to install the drivers on my networked 98 SE's before searching for a printer. On the XP machines they found it and then installed the driver auto, I would suggest installing the drivers and doing the search, If your driver for the HP had to be installed first then plugged in to the USB second (like mine did) this could be the possible solution.

Making UK English the default in Word

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153342863/

  • alanturk - I use Microsoft Word 2002 with Windows XP, SP1 and SP2. As I live in the UK I prefer to use the English (UK) dictionary for spell-checking. I have tried to make this the default dictionary numerous times, but it seems that after a while it slips back to English (US), throwing up various spelling errors, simply because I use words like "honour" instead of the American spelling "honor". Can anyone please tell me how to make English (UK) the default and for it to stay that way?
  • Ray - Have you tried running install for Word (you can get there through the Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs) and marking the Proofing Tools for US under Office Tools as Not Available?
  • alanturk - Thanks for your help, Ray. Unfortunately I was a little out of my depth when I tried your suggestion. This is what I did:
Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Microft Word 2002 - Change - Select "Add or Remove Features" - Next - Open "Office Tools" - Open "Office Shared Features" - Open "Proofing Tools" - Open "English" - Open "Spelling and Grammar Checkers"
At this point I was presented with this list:
Run from My Computer, Run all from My Computer, Installed on First Use, X Not Available
Not knowing what to do next, I backed off. Did I follow the route you intended? If not, please could you elaborate a little, otherwise, which of the options I found should I have chosen?
  • Ray - Yes, that sounds all correct. I don't remember if I have ever done that before, but I would choose "X Not Available" for the ones that you do not want. Then click on the Update Now button. You will probably have to insert the CD when it asks for it.
Do they have both British English and American English (or whatever they call them)? If not, maybe this is not the way to disable US English.
If this does not work, you can always come back and select "Run from My Computer" (or whatever it was before) for the ones you removed, to get them back.
  • Jogor - Try Start/Control Panel/Date,Time, Language and Regional Options/Regional and Language Options/Languages/Details/check the default input language window to see if English [United Kingdom is listed there, if so select that and Apply and OK your way out.
If English [UK] is not there click Add and install it, Apply and then OK out. Restart your computer. Open Word/Tools/Language/Set Language, select English [UK] and make it the default language. Close Word and reopen. It should be the default then, if not reboot again.
  • alanturk - My thanks to both Ray and Jogor for your suggestions. Ray, when I tried X Not Available, all that happened was that it made the spelling and grammar checker not available, so I put them back with Run from my Computer. Jogor, when I tried your suggestions, it seems that English (UK) is already selected (as I thought I had already set it that way!) but Word sometimes chooses to ignore that fact and does spell checking from the US dictionary (I never use the grammar checker anyway, as I don't find its suggestions helpful). I guess I'll just have to put up with what I take to be a bug in the Word software. Odd, isn't it, that it sometimes does what I want but at other times gets in a sulk and refuses to co-operate! Thanks again.
  • Ray - From what you say, Alan, I would think that there is a UK version of Word. I know in Russia they had Russian versions of Word.
  • alanturk - You may be right, Ray. I bought Word 2002 as part of the package when I bought my PC, which is an HP Pavilion, from a well-known UK shop, so I would expect it to be a UK version if such a thing exists. However, on checking Word Help "About", I looked under System Info, then Office 10 Applications, then Microsoft Word 2002 and finally Summary, where I found this:

    Language English (United States)
    System language designation English (U.K.)

I don't see any obvious way to change English (United States) to English (U.K.) in the first of those two lines. I feel ready now to accept that sometimes I need to specify the UK dictionary when I get unexpected spelling errors.
            Thanks again for your interest.

Verify error with WinRescue XP

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153674854/

  • Meri051846 - After a backup with WinRescue XP, there is ALWAYS a window that states: "The Following files could not be copied: Backup 1.009 could not be verified. 22552 files backed up". Of course that last number of files always changes, but the rest remains the same. What does this mean and is it a problem? Thanx! MERI
  • Ray - No, it is not a problem. Verify does not work with split files. That is why you are getting that error.
WinRescue is splitting the backup because it is too big to fit in one file.
Verify is not needed because if the backup is bad, WinRescue will tell you. I simply added Verify because some users wanted it. I would suggest that you uncheck Verify.
  • Meri051846 - Thanx, Ray...I just unchecked the Verify.

copying data to cd

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153937651/

  • Pat Oelslager - Why wont my computer recognize a new cd or sometime read a data or cd that has photos or other info on them.my computer is an hp pavilion a1129n, it has Sonic Record Now program, some time I have to put the cd in the dvd slot and it will read it but it will not read a new cd to copy or burn in the cd slot. If it is going to read the cd I can hear it speed up, if not it just sits there making its usual noise. I have tried everything, even as far as going to safe mode . Hp or Sonic wasn't any help, Thanks Pat
  • dlwolff0 - Is this a new problem? Has the drive worked previously and just stopped working?
Do you get an error message when the drive fails to read a disk? Error message when you insert a blank disk?
If you are getting an error such as "the drive is not ready", this could be a hardware failure.

    Things to check.
Look for a firmware update for your drive on the manufacturer's web site.
Check device manager [Control panel\system\hardware] to see if it shows any problem with your drive.
What version of Sonic Record Now are you currently using? Is your drive supported by this version? You may need an update to the software.
When you put a disk in the CD slot to read, if it fails to read it try going to start\run and type in the drive letter [D: or whatever it is]. Will the computer then read the disk?

It would also be helpful to know what version of Windows you are running.
  • Pat Oelslager - Thanks for the rep;y, haven't had time to try these new things, but I will as soon as possible. Will get back to you later. Thanks Pat

Live update for Norton

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153094326/

  • welsh793 - For the past two weeks I have been unable to update my Norton Live virus update. I have done everything they suggest but I can't download for whatever reason? I have even concidered removing Norton Virus Protection and go with some other program. I have used MacAfee and and was told a few years ago that Norton was better?
If anyone has a suggestion why, or how to get the live update, I'd appreciate any help. I've changed the priority on Internet explorer to low thinking that might be the problem, no help. At this point, don't know what to do.
  • dlwolff0 - Are you getting error messages when you try to run Live Update?
Most of the errors you receive, when Live Update fails, have links to the Symantec support site included in the LU interface. If you click on these links they will take you to a support page that attempts to solve your problem. This may not be true if you are running an older version of Norton AntiVirus, prior to 2004. You may also download updates directly from the Symantec web site. http://www.symantec.com/downloads/index.jsp
  • welsh793 - I have the latest Norton System Works 2006. I went to their site and tried to get a live update. That didn't work I also did an auto fix which they feature and it aid it could load to my system. I removed the program with add/remove on the control panel and reloaded it but that didn't work.
Symantec gave me a site to go to get a live update [bftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/2.7/lusetup.exe but I get an error message saying it can't find it. It all has to do with ftp://ftp whatever that means.
So there is all I have attempted to do. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

[editor's note - I have removed many of the messages because there were many. To see the entire text, please use the link above and veiw it on our website]

  • pakama - I was also having problems with Norton. I found the solution to be to dump it and go to AVG. So far I am not sorry.
  • welsh793 - Where do I get AVG? Please!
  • quinland - I was having a similar problem with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate edition. Not only could I not use live update, but when I checked the SAV settings, the automatic startup message was changed to something like: "Enable autoscan on startup (Disabled)." When I clicked on the checkbox, it turned to "Disabled." I could not start the autoscan.
I ran Symantec anti-virus, SpySweeper, Spybot S&D, and Adaware SE personal - nothing was found. I then ran Microsoft Defender, which found a file that, when eliminated, returned the system back to normal. I don't recall the name of the malware.
I made a System Restore point for the first time it worked again, and have returned there (or an update) when the problem arose again.
Has anyone else encountered this? Do you know the name?
  • alanturk - I have been using AVG for a long time. It has an extremely good reputation and is FREE! [editor's note - AVG is no longer free] It warns you when you ought to be getting the latest update, and I have never had any problems with it. You can find it at http://www.grisoft.com/ Click on PRODUCTS on the left of the page, then on AVG Free Edition. I'm sure you won't regret it!

Backing up the Registry

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153674418/

  • Meri051846 - I have WinRescue XP. How do I back up my registry with it? Thanx!
  • dlwolff0 - To set up your backup files, use the backup wizard.
It is accessed through the button on the left of the window.
It leads you step by step, one of the first questions asked is "Would you like to back up the registry?"
  • Meri051846 - Thanx so much! I'll check that out.
  • Ray - The default settings of WinRescue backs up the registry. So you should just have to click on the Backup button on the Backup tab.
  • Meri051846 - Thanx, Ray. I guess it's getting backed up whenever I do a backup then. That's good to know.
  • Ray - Yes, it is unless you went into the Backup Properties section and unchecked Registry.
  • Meri051846 - I just went into the Backup Properties section, Ray, and the Registry is checked, so I'm okay. Thanx for that info. Just wondering, though, if a person goes into their Registry, changes something, and then has a problem...can that person somehow use the WinRescue XP Backup of their Registry to fix the problem?
  • Ray - Yes, as long as you make a backup of the registry before you made the changes, you just need to restore the backup using WinRescue and it will all be back the way it was before.
To do that click on the Crash Fixer tab, select the Backup that you want to restore, make sure the Windows Crash (Registry) checkbox is checked, and then click on the big Restore button. You will have to restart the computer when prompted to. That will put everything in the registry back to the way it was when you made the backup.
  • Meri051846 - Thanx again, Ray!
  • pipdev - just to add to a comment of mine from some time ago on this topic:- That's what I use WinRescue for - I know I can muck about with the Registry to my heart's content, make all sorts of messes, and then use WinRescue to undo all my errors. Good innit !!!

Yahoo icon disappeared

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1154443923/

  • Leesa - After the computer repairman messed around on my computer, I no longer have the Yahoo icon on the top toolbar when I have MSN homepage open. This annoys me, and I don't know how to get it back. He messed up several other things, but I figured out how to restore them to normal. Can you help?
  • dlwolff0 - Try right clicking on the toolbar and see what options it gives you.
Was the Yahoo icon a link or what did it do?
Another possiblity is that you had a version of Internet Explorer modified by Yahoo and the tech installed a standard I.E. browser. In that case, you could simply reinstall the Yahoo browser.

Yahoo and Internet Security

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1154891256/

  • Speedie - I had Yahoo Messenger.... but about 2 weeks ago, it would no longer login and be usable unless I disabled my Internet Security.. Once I disable it, then Yahoo Messenger works fine... Is there a way to have Yahoo on all the time, like I used to, without diabling my Internet Security???? HELP
  • dlwolff0 - You simply need to change the settings in Internet Security [Norton?] to allow Yahoo Messenger to connect to the Internet.
  • Cassandra - It could easily be that your "Internet Security" includes a firewall which is blocking Yahoo Messenger. The symptom fits.
If you know how to, make sure that your firewall is set to allow both incoming and outgoing communication with the Yahoo Messenger program itself, and that the following ports are open: TCP 5000-5001 (for using Yahoo Messenger with chat) and UDP 5055 (for using Yahoo Messenger with a telephone). If your firewall is of a kind which asks you if you want to allow the program to be a server, answer "Yes".

Disk Scan keeps running at startup

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1154883751/

  • yosemite5156 - I am using WinXP Home. When I reboot windows states because win was not shut down properly that one or more of my drives need to be checked then it does a scan check on drive D: The one time I had to do a recovery it work right for a while now it is back to doing the scan Check how do I get this fixed
  • dlwolff0 - If you are not shutting down Windows by going to start\shut down, you will get an error every time.
Try opening My Computer and right click on drive D. Choose properties. On the tools tab click to check now under error checking. When the window opens, choose both options- check for and fix errors and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
When you click to check the disk, it will tell you it needs full control of the disk. Click to run at your next reboot. This will run Check Disk on drive D and fix any errors. This should solve the problem until you have another bad shutdown.
If the problem continually occurs and you are shutting down correctly, then the disk may be beginning to fail. How old is the disk? I would keep current backups for any important data if this is the case.
  • yosemite5156 - ********** Ten Stars for you thanks Worked great.

Locking Startup

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1155490992/

  • maeleoin - Is there a way to lock startup? Frequently, programs like Quicktime add an entry to the start menu whenever the program is used. Periodically I go through the start menu to eliminate starts for seldom used programs. They seem to reappear more frequently than I actually use the programs. It would be nice to have some software that locks the start menu or at least asks before something is allowed to be added.
  • Ray - Our program, Speed Startup, locks out startup items and alerts (at startup) when an item has been added. http://superwin.com/speedstartup.htm
