Automatic Fill-ins
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1151729569/
- billrobb - Often on many web sites I can fill in a box with my information by pressing the first letter and/or just by pushing the down key and the whole entry will be filled in for me, presuming I had done the same entry before. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Can I get it to work more often?
I am not talking about Google auto-fil.
- dlwolff0 - See the following article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217148/en-us It explains how to setup the auto complete feature in Internet Explorer 5 and 6.
- Ray - As I remember it, the autocomplete items for websites are filed according to the name of the textbox that you typed in. Hidden to you, websites have names for each of the textboxes on it. Some names are common, like, "address" or "name".
So if you typed your name in a textbox called "name", your name is saved in the autocomplete list under "name". The next time that you start to type your name in a textbox named "name" (whether it is the same website or not), autocomplete will suggest the names that you had previously typed. The problem is if the website calls the textbox "yourname", "name2", or something different, the things you typed in the "name" textboxes will not be available for autocomplete.
So, to answer your question, no, there is not a way to get it to work more often except to go to more websites and type your name in more textboxes.
- billrobb - thanks, you've given me good advice and information. This site is wonderful! bill
Routers
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1151897165/
- Davo - Please recommend a good router for a home computer. I have always used dialup and feel rather safe with it. Thinking of moving up. Not sure to what. I am concerned about setting up a router correctly. Know nothing about them.
- dlwolff0 - If you have a single computer, you won't need a router. DSL or cable modem and network card can handle the connections. Your ISP will generally provide both.
Most routers will include full setup instructions with programs that take you step by step like the wizards in Windows.
Your router will be safer than dialup because it has a built in hardware firewall to protect your network.
To simplify things get a router from the same manufacturer as your network card.
- Davo - Thank you....I have a number of services turned off including DHCP..I understand I will need to enable it for cable modem. What else should be enabled and is cable best, verses DSL, for a stand alone home PC; also, is there anything I should know concerning security settings throughout my system that would pertain to this/these types of internet connection(s)? This would include firewall configurations.
- dlwolff0 - DHCP will be necessary, unless you pay for a fixed address. This is the service that allows your ISP to set your network address.
When you install your ISP's software it will take care of turning on the services your connection requires.
Security settings can be accessed at the control panel under administrative tools. The majority of these are easy to decide on once you read the descriptions.
One service you might wish to disable is Messenger. A few years ago there was a rash of spammers using this service to send messages directly to your desktop. It is really only needed in a network situation, like a workplace.
Firewalls generally configure themselves. It will drive you to distraction, while it is doing this, by asking about every program that tries to make a connection. This will slow down in time as it recognizes your software.
You will really enjoy the speed of your new connection Very much worth the initial hassle to get it setup and running.
- Davo - Ok ! Thanks dlwolffo..
Cannot Remove Program
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152546949/
- pinok - In windows XP when I try to remove a program with the add or remove option I get the message RUNDLL error loading Ctor.dll . That specified module could not be found. So it looks like the dll is missing. What other way can I remove that program?
- Ray - The down and dirty way to remove it is to look for its files on your harddrive and delete them. Then look for entries in the registry for that program and remove them (RegVac may be of a help doing this especially the Software Vac part). Then look for any other shortcuts or files that you might have missed.
A better way would be to reinstall that program (that should repair the Add/Remove problem) and then uninstall it. You should still run RegVac after doing this because uninstall programs have a bad habit of leaving registry entries behind. But it is still better than the down and dirty option mentioned above.
right click menu options
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152580299/
- Leesa - I recently had to reformat my computer. Everything came back fine except there are some things missing from the right click menu. How do I add options to that menu? I really am not very computer literate, but do understand the basics. Thanks.
- Ray - It all depends on what is missing. Installing Windows put the basic items on the right click menu. Some programs when you install them, put their own items on the menu. And other items can be put there by making changes in the registry (I would think that if you did this that you would remember it).
All of the right click menu items are kept in the registry so if you did a registry backup/restore using WinRescue as part of the reformatting process, they should all be back.
- Leesa - Thanks Ray. Your programs are my favorite and most reliable....wouldn't be without them.
MS Disk Cleanup not working
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152704499/
- bbelljack - I frequently use Disk Cleanup to remove junk files from my computers at home and at work to keep my memory clear. Now, however my computer at home refuses to delete the files when I choose that option. I have run the program 8 times and the same files come up as still on my computer. The largest block is temporary files. Is there another option to use to clean my computer or do I need to purchase another program to delete these files.
Also, my computer is showing that my version of Windows may not be genuine because I had a computer crash last year and the tech I took it to reloaded Windows but apparently he did not use a valid version of Windows to fix my computer. So does anyone know if that is the reason Disk Cleanup is not working properly?
The only other thing is that my daughter is now living with me and she uses this computer a lot & I am not sure what sites she is viewing. This problem is really bugging me because my computer is slowing down considerably since I cannot remove these files.
- dlwolff0 - See the following knowledge base article - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823302 Says that a corrupted temporary file can cause disk cleanup from responding and gives a work around for the problem.
- bbelljack - Thanks for the info. I will try this tonight when I get home. I really appreciate this. I try not to be too touchy concerning my computer, but I really don't trust my daughter to be careful about the sites she visits.
Backing up all of Hard Drive with WinRescue XP
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152737238/
- GentleGiant - If I choose to back up all of my hard drive, can this be stored on an external hard drive and restored if needs be from that please?
- Ray - Yes. That should not be a problem for WinRescue.
- GentleGiant - Thanks for the prompt reply Ray!
- GentleGiant - Sorry I did not think of this before, but should I need to restore the whole hard drive (backed up through WinRescueXP to an external hard drive), will WinRescueXP do this too automatically via the Restore Wizard? Would there be any others steps I would need to take please? Thanks again!
- Ray - Please be aware that backing up the entire drive with WinRescue is not the same as making an image of the drive. WinRescue just backs up files.
This is meant to be used as a backup in case you need to restore individual files. It can be used to restore the entire drive, but it is not easy (and if Windows was on that drive, it will have to be reinstalled first). You can try using the Crash Fixer but that probably will not restore all of the files. The best thing to do is to use the Extractor to restore each backup file (which are many).
- GentleGiant - Thanks for the clarification. I was unsure whether WinRescueXP made an image of my hard drive or not.
how to add a program to startup
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152907462/
- jcm3008 - i would like to have Outlook start automatically when i boot my computer. i used to do it but have forgotten how to set it up.
- Ray - The easiest way would be to put a link in the Startup folder which is in the All Programs section of the Start menu. That part of the Start menu is taken from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and from a similar location in the current user's section of Documents and Settings.
Either make a shortcut in one of the above locations and point it to the Outlook Express program file or find one of the shortcuts to Outlook Express and copy it to the Startup folder. You can copy it by right clicking on the shortcut and choosing Copy from the popup menu. Then right click in the Startup folder and select Paste.
IE "Cannot find Server" msg attempting to log in
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152465800/
- hctim57 - Running Windows XP Home Edition ver 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600, my son cannot
access web pages requiring a log in. He's using both Internet Explorer and Firefox
browsers. Regular pages load fine just URLs that require logging in won't load. He
gets that standard IE error msg like when your network is down that says "This Page
cannot be displayed". He asked Dad to help so I checked all the IE Options that deal
with security and privacy. I matched all attributes to my laptop (XP HOME same build)
that can access pages requiring a login and matched each feature under ADVANCED
tab. All attributes for CONNECTION and WIRELESS configuration match up fine. What
might I be overlooking? Thanks,
- dlwolff0 - See if this article covers the problem you are encountering - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884488/en-us
- hctim57 - Thanks, that link was helpful. I have SP2 installed and those firewall settings are selected (for http and https) as they should be. I was having trouble accessing https sites and pages with SSL protection. What I then found was that I had Norton AV partially uninstalled. The laptop came from Dell with 6 months of Norton. When it expired I downloaded AVG by Gristsoft and installed it and uninstalled Norton. The uninstall left some firewall settings in place that must have conflicted with Windows Firewall. I delected all references to Norton and I'm now able to access https sites. Thanks much.
Wireless Routers and Phones
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152878520/
- hpruett - Do the 2.4ghz wireless phones really interfere with reception from wireless routers? I have to buy a new phone/answering machine, but have been told (years ago) to stay away from the 2.4ghz models.
- dlwolff0 - After a google search, I would have to say the answer is yes. There are posts on many forums of interference with wireless routers by 2.4 ghz wireless phones.
- hpruett - Thanks. I'll move on to the 5.8ghz variety.
- jccomputer - when someone is on the phone I loose my internet connection have to wait till they hang up. I cannot wait to replace my phones.
Mailwasher wants OE password
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152724176/
- Leesa - I didn't even know OE had a password! I haven't used Mailwasher for several years...way back when it was Freeware. Since I dumped Incredimail, I wanted to use MW again. Set up and registration went fine, but when I go to check mail, it wants OE's user name and password. Since I never even knew OE had a password, I don't have the slightest idea what it could be.....have tried every other password I have ever used for other things....they don't work. Since I am the administrator account, I checked in there too, but didn't see anything about OE password. Can anyone HELP me find a way to set a new password, or whatever, to get Mailwasher working? Oh, my server has no ideas want to do about it.
- dlwolff0 - I think what it is requesting is your account username and password so it can access OE.
The program would need this in case there was more than one account on your computer, so it could be sure it was working on your email messages and not some for another account.
- Leesa - That's what I thought too, so entered it. Wrong password! There are seven ****** in the password area, but my account password has 5. It's never been changed since I opened the account. I wonder if the techs changed it when they installed DSL. Sometimes I get so fed up with all the silly, but complicated, issues that arise with this machine.
- dlwolff0 - According to the Mail Washer web site, the program requires your email user name and password.
The program connects directly to the server to process your email, you don't even have to open your email program until you want to import the messages you want.
Hope this clears up the problem
- Leesa - Yes, dlwolff0, that's the way I understand it too. So, it should work with my regular password that has never been changed. The only thing that changed is that I went to DSL from dial-up, and I think the guy must have changed it when he set up the new connection. When it cools down, and I feel better, I am going to make a new connection myself, with my password, and see if that works. Thanks for your input.
VISTA, the new OS in 2007!
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152183240/
- triuno - Hello everybody, how about some basic facts on this subject. Does someone already know what the minimum requirements for good HARDWARE is for VISTA? Other things to take into account? Other programs, WORDS? EXCEL? are the old ones good or do we have to buy new ones... printers-screens-other equipment? Does anyone know for sure?
- dlwolff0 - You can download a utility from Microsoft that will check your computer and tell you if your hardware and software will run under Windows Vista. It will also recommend what version of Vista you should use.
On the downside, you will have to install the .NET framework in order to run the utility. If you already have .NET installed than you should try out the utility.
- Anashwaran - Why not putting a link to this utility? Thanks
- Laverne - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx - Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor beta. Note that this is a beta version. And can only be run on WinXP computers. Hope this helps.
- jccomputer - Try this site - http://www.pcpitstop.com/vistaready/default.asp
- Chaz - From the looks of it, you're going to want to have 1GB of RAM and a fast processor; I'd say a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 or anything dual-core. Also, a 64MB DirectX 9 video card is nice to be able to enjoy the "Aero Glass" GUI (graphical user interface).
BURNING DVDS
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1149500249/
- Robspace1 - I am getting super frustrated trying to burn DVDs-I have no problem with MP3s- but it seems there is almost always one reason or another for a copy not to be made-I use the best blanks made and my burners work good-I have Nero but none of the programs works well-Anybody recommend a good burner program?
- jean - What kind of dvd are you trying to burn, rented or borrowed movie dvd's or copyed? If you are trying to burn these types you may need the program called Dvd Shrink to first copy movie/show/dvd to your harddrive and then burn with nero, or any other dvd burning program. You can get more info about this program here (www.dvdshrink.info) also more about burning dvd in general. I hope this is a help
- Robspace1 - Thanks-I am downloading movies from the internet to hard drive-Getting them onto dvds is the problem-It may be the codes-Hollywood is getting smarter and making it hard to make a dvd -audio cds work fine-not the movies--o-well-I can watch them on my monitor-it's tv sized-19"---thanks for the input
- joemccall - i use power producer gold 2 its a great program and it gives you a lot of options had no problem copying anything also making anything film or disc wise also it has a power director function
- Robspace1 - Thanks Joe-I'll check it out-I have ruined to many dvds trying to get them to burn-I finally had to spend a little more and get the re-writable's--
- plonkeroo - I never found Nero or many of the others much good. I've only found Roxio formerly Adaptec to work (albeit slowly).
- rdvrey - I have found very often that programming problems are due to insufficient power supply. And very often burners have stringent requirements on the power site.
What happens is as follows : when writing the cd or dvd is written from the inside out it starts with a high speed that gradually becomes slower until it reaches the end of the disc. Then it needs to write the index which is the most inner circle the player suddenly increases to maximum speed and the power supply looses control over the 12 and 5V. The logic fails and so does the burn process.
How to test : burn at minimum speed if that works use a bigger power supply!
This way I was able to create a working solution for a external USB dvd burner reaching yes 16 speed.
Most external burner use the same kind as used in laptops versions that use less power but are more flimsy and the total process is slower. I used a DVD BenQ DW1640!
- Richey1 - I use Copy to DVD SE from VSO software. Works pretty well. Here is there homepage - http://www.vso-software.fr/
Also if you are trying to make backups of DVD movies and it is copyright protected you need special software to get around that. The best I have found is 1Click DVD copy. Both these programs work together along with a little program called DVD 43. DVD 43 Decrypts the protection.
- Robspace1 - Thanks folks for all the ideas-I will check them all out-The main problem is the fact that these are copy protected mainly-I use Limewire and Ares to download; which works good; my burners are internal and my system is all new with 350 gb. H.d. and 1 gig of ram-so speed is not an issue-I have dsl---but; as soon as I can find one good software that will copy dvds and mp3s' I will but it for sure-I have some success with some of them sometimes but the overall dependability rate is bad--still lookin-thanks
- Richey1 - For $80 Buy 1 Click DVD Copy. This program will take any DVD and put it on a 4.5 GB DVD. When you buy this program it comes with DVD copy software . The only other thing is you will have to download DVD43 decrypeter. This program gets around just about any copyright protection. This is free. Make sure you get the free version. When you buy i Clicke DVD copy it will direct you to the site to download this software. This is the easiest and best DVD copy program out their. I have tried them all. http://www.lgsoftwareinnovations.com/download.asp
- Robspace1 - Richey1-Thanks alot-I did just that last night-I gambeled on the 1 click and won!--It cost 59.00 and it worked great-I burned one protected disk to another in 30min.-I did download the DVD43-Free-good price!--But why the stupid smiley face?lol-Question-The 1 click came with a bonus program called Copy Dvd To Dvd--where is it?-Is it a seperate download or is it part of the 1 click?--Thanks again--Tip-If your looking for Spyware removal software; be aware of Spyware Detector-I paid for it but have had problems-It has crashed my system a few times-Unlike Rays stuff-They are deleting some system files that are needed to run--they said they are working on the problem-They will have a good product after the bugs are worked out--but for now -not safe--
- Richey1 - Copy to DVD should have been downloaded with 1 Click. If it did not contact 1 click support and they will guide you to where to dowload it or go to start then to programs and look for vso it should be in the vso folder vso software makes the program. When you first put in a DVD the smiley will turn into a devil. We smile because we are laughting at copyright protection.
- Robspace1 - Richey--I got both the programs but I'm having problems getting my new Pioneer DVD recorder to play it-It will record and play back a tv show but when I burned a movie on my pc' it would'nt play it back-I used JVC dvd-rw.-The unit came with TDK DVD-RW- I have been working with the 1click tech support people-they asked for my logs-I sent them-I called Panasonic tech support and they said the player is not the problem; as it will record and playback so I called Panasonic Tech support and it was determined to be either a software problem or the movie not "finalizing"--whatever that is-it will play back on the pc-the media is fine-any idea?-Have you had this happen? BTW the 1 Click support team are great-! That alone is worth the money-Good response to emails--
- Chaz - I'm not sure where you can find it, but NTI DVD Maker is good too. I also have Nero OEM Suite, but I don't really like it.
SATA harddrives
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153076901/
- palmerg - I was about to order a new larger hard drive for my computer when a friend advised that my motherboard was not equiped to use the Serial ATA hard drive that I had in mind. Also he said that it was not compatable with Acronis Disk Director that I curently have installed. I knew that Acronis was not compatable with the Vista Beta 2, but did not know that any problem existed with the SATA drives. I am aware that a SATA cable was necessary to instal the drive, but was not aware that would not work with my motherboard Intel D845GERG2--D845GEBV2. Where do I go from here?
- dlwolff0 - Take a look at this link, it compares 22 different SATA and ultra ATA hard drives.
You should be able to find one you can use. - http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/09/27/round/
If your motherboard doesn't support SATA drives, you can install a controller card to connect to a SATA drive.
Saving Downloaded Software
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1152471899/
- Reled - I have a large number of software programs(paid for) that were downloaded to my PC.
How does one go about making copies(burning to CDs) so that zillions of $$$$ won't be lost if the PC encounters a problem of some nature?
- Ray - First you need to find the file in Windows Explorer that you downloaded. Then there are all kinds of ways to make copies of them.
One way is to right click on the file and select Copy from the popup menu. Then go to where you want to put a copy of it, right click and choose Paste.
Another way is just to drag it to the location where you want it. If you are dragging it to a different drive, it will copy it instead of moving it (in other words, it will not delete the original file). If you are dragging it to the same drive, it will move it.
If you have CD burning software, you can start it and copy the files through it to the CD.
- Reled - Thanks for your response, Ray!
"First you need to find the file in Windows Explorer that you downloaded," That's the part that is my problem. Am I looking for an exe file or just the software program itself?
Sorry to be so dense...........
- pschonstrom - The file extension of the software that you downloaded may or may not be .exe. I have downloaded programs that were compressed files and have the file extension .zip.
Because I always direct files being downloaded to a specific folder, I’ve not paid much attention recently to where the download is going from the server that downloads the files. My feeling is that the default is on your PC and it is probably the My Documents folder (c:\Documents and Settings\the folder that has your name on it – at least that is the way it is with mine\My Documents.
You indicate that you have downloaded a number of files so finding them is probably going to take some time and effort on your part. One clue to look for is that most – not all – downloaded programs use some form of an abbreviation of the program name for the file name. Examples:
audacity-win-1.2.4b.exe, Designpro_V5_Limited.exe, DS_16_76_update.zip, Mid2mp3convwin.zip. I think that you get the idea.
I’ve a cautionary, however. Be sure that the file name fits with what you recall as being the name of the program that you downloaded. Before opening the file, I would consider going so far as to right-click on the file name and select from the menu, where you will often find the full name of the program, or its originator or source to ensure identification of the file.
My reason is that these are usually self-extracting files – that is to say that when you double-click the file name to open it, it immediately begins extracting program files, setting up your PC configurations for the program, and loading the files on your PC. Ray knows the risks better than I do and he (or other ‘lurkers’) may not agree with me, but in my opinion, since it is possible to have a virus file on your PC via email or via broadband if you have no firewall, you could be opening up a file that could spell disaster.
I’m of the better-safe-than-sorry school which is the reason that I always look to see where the program is going to be downloaded and reset the destination if needed to a folder that I have created for the purpose – Example: c:\Downloaded Files. This way, if I find a suspicious looking file name and it is not in my Downloaded Files folder, I don’t open it!
Another help is to enter the unknown file name into Google, Yahoo or whichever search engine is your favorite. Often it will come back with the program name, company, and so on which slhould elevate your confidence factor.
- Reled - Thank you so much!! I have my work cut out for me, but feel more confident
- Ray - Usually the Save As dialog defaults to the last place where you saved a file to (sometimes it default to the My Documents folder but not very often). That is, if you selected Save instead of Open when you downloaded the file.
If you selected Open, then the file was downloaded to a temporary folder, run, and then deleted. So if you selected Open, you do not have a copy of the downloaded file.
If you selected Save, then most of your downloaded files should be in the same place. I also download all of my files to a certain place on my computer but I do that for organization's sake and not because it will protect me from virus files (I doubt that it would).
One thing that you could do is go to a website that has a download link, click on it, select Save from the prompt, and see where it defaults the Save As dialog. You may just find all of your downloads there.
Incorporating graphics in RTF text
Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1153333933/
- Charles Bloomquist - I am compiling a family history using a program called Family Origins 9.0. I have entered the data and generated from it a “book,” which I can save as an rtf file. I can then further edit the “book.” I also have photos (jpg) that I would like to incorporate. I find that taken separately the text file is about 500 KB and the photo is also of the same order. When I incorporate the photo in the text the file leaps up to 13 MB and continues to grow at astronomical leaps as I add more photos. Is this normal? What is going on?
- Ray - Yes, as I remember it (it has been a long time since I have used RTF), that is normal. The thing is that (again, if I remember this correctly) the pictures have to be saved in the text in BMP format.
Last month in our newsletter (you can view it online at http://superwin.com/RaysComputerTips/Issue12.htm) I wrote an article explaining the different picture formats. JPG is basically a compressed BMP file and so the BMP format that is saved in the text for your JPG file will be several times bigger.
- Charles Bloomquist - Thanks for the response, but saving the picture in bmp format did not solve the problem. Let me restate the problem as follows. I have three files, which I will call J(RTF), E(W), and J(W). The J files are in RTF and Word and the E file is a photo saved in Word. Their sizes are J(RTF) 12.7KB, J(W)18.3KB, and E(W) 320KB. When I open J(RTF) or J(W) and then open E(W) select, copy and insert it into J(RTF) or J(W) the file size is 39.6MB. When I open E(W) and insert either of the J files the size is 344KB. What is happening here? And how can I prepare a document with many photos that has a size somewhat less than astronomical?
- Ray - You misunderstood me.
What you experienced is normal. I was not telling you how to get around that because I don't think that there is a way around it. I was simply explaining why that happens. It is also possible that the RTF formatting adds code around the picture that makes it even bigger.
If you don't want the file so big, don't use RTF. That is the only solution that I know of and I am sure that is the only solution that there is.

- or-live.com - Ray - Here is a website for viewing surgeries - http://www.or-live.com
If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition which requires surgery, this is a good website to go to and find your surgery or newer surgeries to correct your condition. The video that I watched was an hour long and spent most of the time explaining the surgery in lecture style. This website is for doctors and so the terminology is technical. They explained the different problems and why their surgical procedure is better.
This website has live presentations of surgical procedures (what is usually live is the lecture and not the surgery itself) and archived live presentations (which really are not live). Many of these presentations seem to be used to promote new ways of doing certain surgeries.
