backing up outlook express

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1182356496/

  • billrobb - where is the location of my outlook express folders ex:deleted items, in box, sent items, and all the folders that I have put saved e-mails in..
  • Ray - Different versions of Windows have it in different places. The easiest way to find it is to do a search (click on the Start button in Windows and select Search) for .dbx on your computer. The folder where those files are found is the location where Outlook Express keeps its folders and emails.
If you find more than one location, look at the date of the files and the one with the most current dates is the current location.
The location on my Windows XP computer is C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{89EF8948-5C9E-47BA-AEF3-2DB634FD6694}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. The HP_Owner part and {89EF8948-5C9E-47BA-AEF3-2DB634FD6694} part in the above location is different on different computers. I have also seen the location in a similar place but in the Windows directory.
  • BeeTee - I've been using a free Outlook Express Utility for over two years. I have restored my files twice in that time with very good results. You can find the free OEBackup program at http://www.oehelp.com/

e-mail setup - pop3 and smtp server

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1183756708/

  • billrobb - how do i find out my pop3 server and my smtp server
  • Ray - Your email provider has that information. You can either call them up on the phone and ask them or go to their website. On their website that information should be in the Support section.
  • billrobb - Thanks, but I know they are in my computer somewhere as my e-mail works fine.
  • billrobb - The reason I have to find out the pop 3 and smtp is that I have yahoo mail and first I choose the picture and then file-send to-and then it goes to a wizard that will send it to someone..the wizard demands th pop3 server and my smtp Thanks again for your help, Ray
  • Ray - In Outlook Express go to the Tools menu. When the menu expands go down to Accounts and click on it. That opens the Internet Accounts window. On the Mail tab select the account you want to know about and click on the Properties button. This opens the Properties window. The POP3 and SMTP settings are on the Server tab. POP3 is the Incoming Mail Server and SMTP is the Outgoing Mail Server.

lost regvac software

  • billrobb - where do i find registered users section to duplicate bought software
  • Ray - Go to our website - http://www.superwin.com
Go to the page of the product that you want (in this case, go to the RegVac page).
Click on the Registered Users link at the top of the page.

Wireless Laptop in France

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1185378960/

  • Ted Lawrence - I am shortly going to France for six months to work and would really like to receive and send emails from a wireless laptop or PC as there is no telephone connection at the place I shall be. Can you please tell me if I can still use my virginmedia provider or would I have to sign up with a french provider?
  • Ray - I do not know about virginmedia whether they are in france or not. You should be able to find that out from virginmedia by going to their website or calling them.
I have travelled some and many times there are free wireless hotspots where you can connect to the internet. In these cases, all you have to do is turn on your computer, search for wireless networks, and hook up.
If it connects but you still cannot get on the internet, try opening your browser. Sometimes these networks will require you to log in first through your browswer. If this is the case, the browser will open on their website. If it is free, it will not ask for your credit card information. If you give your credit card information, don't be surprised when they charge your credit card.
If you know someone in france where you are going, you might want to ask them about connecting to the internet using wireless. They may be able to give you more details about that.
  • Ted Lawrence - Thank you Ray you have been a great help
  • hoover - Cybercafes and similar establishments are frequently found in all but the smallest villages in France, so it's not even necessaqry to take your own computer with you if you only want to use email. Many will let you plug in your own laptop.
Many hotels will also allow you to plug in or use their wi-fi but not all wiothout charge. That's also the case with bars, resturants that have wi-fi.
If you don't live on the European continent and take your own computer, you will have to buy a fairly inexpensive mains adaptor but ensure your charger will work on 110 volts, AC.
  • Ray - Thank you, hoover. Good information.
I just wanted to clarify what hoover meant by "mains adaptor". I think that he is talking about an adaptor for the power cord to plug into European electric outlets. If I remember correctly, European outlets have two round holes while US outlets have two rectangular slots. You will need an adaptor to allow your plug to plug into their outlet.

Convert to m4a file?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1185448494/

  • dragonfly - Somehow my windows music files got converted to m4a format and now I can't play because WinXP, home does not recognize the file. Can someone lead me to a conversion program to download the conversion file that does not cost an arm and a leg?
  • Ray - If you reinstall or update the program that is playing those files the installation should fix that problem. You can update Windows Media Player at the following link - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1d224714-e238-4e45-8668-5166114010ca&DisplayLang=en
  • johnp - Try this site:http://nch.com.au/switch/index.html
  • dragonfly - Thank You! Without you people, people like me would be in a dead zone in some of these jams I put myself into.
Thanks again. (Hope I can shed some light sometime to someone in troubled waters)

original settings for Microsoft

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1185560579/

  • sunflower - I downloaded Real Player onto Windows XP. It changed my music settings so I can no longer hear Wav music. Can anyone help me please?
  • dlwolff0 - To play the .wav files, choose one, right click on it [to bring up the context menu]. Choose "Open With", this should bring up a window asking what program you want to open the file with. The music player you want to use may or may not be displayed. If it isn't displayed, then click browse and navigate to the .exe file of the player you want to use.
  • sunflower - Yes I can do this thanks. It's when I go to a site like Piano Nancys'World and click on a song title to hear it that I get no sound only the box to download the song , which I don'e want to do.On Nancys site ( and others ) I can hear the music on the home page but none on the wav pages. Would downloading Windows media Player again take care of this? And if I did download would I first have to uninstall the Windows Media Player I have on here now?
  • dlwolff0 - The browser uses a Windows media player plugin, if you can hear any music then it is working. When you reassociate the .wav files with the player, you should be able to hear them also..
  • sunflower - What do you mean - reassociate the.wav files with the player?
  • dlwolff0 - That's what the initial post was about.
Your computer has a program associated with opening any type of file. That's why you couldn't open .wav files after uninstalling Real Player. When you install it, it takes over opening any files it can, unless you tell it not to in the preferences section.
When you do the right click and open with, you reassociate .wav files with Windows Media Player, so that your computer will use it to open those files again. Once that is done, the browser plug in should also open them.
  • sunflower - When I go to Nancys' page for example I click on what artist I want to hear. When the page comes up I click on the song I want tp hear. before media player always came up automatically and started playing the song. Now it doesn't , a box comes up asking if I want to "find or save" . I can get no music or media player to come up. Real player did something to the settings for this and that setting is what I'm trying to get back.
  • dlwolff0 - Apparently, I have been unclear in my answers to your question. So I will quote directly from Microsoft.

Change the program that opens a type of file
If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.
Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
            Do one of the following:
If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
  • sunflower - GREAT THANK YOU ! EVERYTHING IS NOW WORKING THE WAY IT PREVIOUSLY WAS. THANKS AGAIN.

Removing multiple windows option during booting

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1179060090/

  • hamza - recently i wanted to install new windows but when trying to format that partition i couldn't so i installed it in a different partition. but i later didn't like multiple windows so i reformatted that partition by actually going through the process of installing new windows and quiting the setup just after formatting that partition.
now when i turn on the computer , while booting three options appear first 2 for the two windows(even though now i have one) and third for launching windows setup.how can get out of this situation.
  • dlwolff0 - If I read this correctly, you had a dual boot setup with two different versions of Windows. You then removed one version by starting to install the other version on that partition.
What version of Windows do you now have on your computer [9x,2000, XP, Vista]?
If you are sure that the second version of Windows no longer exists, you can clean up the boot menu by editing it. The way to do it depends on the version of Windows you are currently using.
  • hamza - i am currently using windows xp pro.
  • Ray - I am sure dlwolff0 was going to tell you this once you told him which Windows you had.
That information is all in the boot.ini file in C:\. You can edit it by opening it with Notepad. Just remove the lines you do not want. If it is not obvious what to remove, do a search on the internet for boot.ini and learn about it first (or you could copy it to a message here and we can tell you what to remove).
Before you make any changes, you should save it as boot.inb or something like that so that you have a backup of it. Then save it as boot.ini and make your changes.
If you cannot find or open boot.ini, change the Advanced Settings on the View tab of Folder Options (get to Folder Options by right clicking on the Start button, selecting Explore from the popup menu, going to the Tools menu, and selecting Folder Options) so that system and hidden files are shown.
  • fnlvn2 - One problem ofter encountered when trying to edit boot.ini is that it's a read only files so the attribute has to be changed.

program to eliminate SPAM

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1165755136/

  • jquigley - Are there programs I can buy to help eliminate SPAM messages.
  • pattigayle - I've been using a freeware program called Cactus Spam http://codeode.com/ It doesn't catch everything but it does a pretty good job
  • rarrows - Try the free version of MailWasher. If it works for you upgrade to Pro. It is the best I've found.
  • hoover - If you use the Opera browser, it offers Opera Web Mail which provides a junk mail filter option to catch spam. Both are available free. I have never used the function and so cannot say how effective it is. However, the browser is far faster than IE, much easier to use and takes up far less space on your hard drive.
  • fnlvn2 - I've got a great free one for you. It's called Choice Mail. It works on a totally different principle than most spam detectors. Rather than looking at the content of the arriving message to determine if it's SPAM or not, it assumes that it IS spam. You then either allow or deny the sender. It takes a couple of days of diligence to collect the senders that you want to recieve from. Many of the spammers use the same domain. This program allows you to deny an entire domain. The publisher is Digital Portal. Just do a Google for Choice Mail and you'll find it. IT'S FREE, IT WORKS, AND I LOVE IT!
PS The free version has some conveniene features limited. It still works great.

Num Lock at Startup

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1186390773/

  • thurlow - My windows has decided to startup with the Num Lock key set. I seem to recall a simple way of stopping this, but am obviously having a grey moment sa I cannot remember it. Can anyone help?
  • dlwolff0 - If I remember correctly the setting is in the BIOS for most computers.
  • thurlow - Thanks for that, of course I remember now - definitely a grey moment.

Time Zones missing

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1186325695/

  • BohemianMary - The Time Zone list only shows the west coast of California, into Mexico and South America (presumably; where is Baku?) I live on the east coast, USA, and now I can't set my clock to automatically adjust itself; it shows my time as one or several hours off from my local time. I'm guessing that some update or other has done this, but I haven't seen anything on the Microsoft or other websites that address any glitches or issues with this problem.
  • Ray - I did a little more research and it seems that those are kept in the registry. So it sounds like what happened is that those items in the registry were removed somehow on your computer.
Reinstalling Windows should put the missing ones in (and, no, you do not need to uninstall Windows first) but here is an easier way. Hopefully, this will work.
I exported my time zone entries from the registry and put them at http://regvac.com/timezones.reg. When you click on this link, it should ask you if you want to Run or Open it. Choose Run and that should put those entries in the registry. Hopefully, that will fix your problem (if it does not seem to work initially, try restarting Windows and then seeing if it works). Let us know if that works.
  • BohemianMary - It works! I loaded your entries, rebooted, and now it shows the map and all the time zones.

Do registry cleaners cause more harm than good?

Find this on our board at http://www.regvac.com/forum/m-1186497018/

  • shad91 - Some Windows "gurus" including Mark R. of Sysinternals fame, say these cleaners cause more harm than good. I'm confused. Been using Ray's products since Windows 95, and it was me that caused any problems! (good old Winrescue was the tool) =) What is the straight talk on registry cleaners...Ray ?
  • Ray - Most registry cleaners are poorly and quickly written to get in on the registry cleaner craze. These bad registry cleaners often have good graphics and look sharp but they can cause some real problems with the registry. They are written by programmers who do not understand the structure of the registry. Yes, they do usually cause more harm than good.
RegVac, on the other hand, has been around since the beginning of registry cleaners and improves every year. It uses hundreds of procedures to check and clean the registry in many different ways. With the registry being the huge monstrosity that it is, it needs a cleaner like RegVac. RegVac has even been known to repair problems with software that could not be repaired in any other way.
Unfortunately, I am a programmer and not a marketer or promoter and so RegVac remains a jewel hidden in the forest of poorly written registry cleaners.
Here is more information on RegVac - http://superwin.com/regvac.htm

  • Saving File in Media Player - Ray - If you ever played a video or music file online in Windows Media Player and wanted to save the file so that you could watch or listen to it later, here is an easy way to do that.
    1. Right click on the icon in the upper left corner of Windows Media Player (just left of the title, Windows Media Player). Or you can press the Ctrl key.
    2. A menu will be displayed.
    3. Chose Save As from the menu.
    4. In the Save As dialog box, decide where to put the file (remember where you save it)
    5. Click on the Save button.
    6. That's all there is to it.

  • sticking cursor - petricig - I have a wireless mouse, and have found that an occasional blast of canned air into the laser opening on the bottom, will work wonders. Apparently even the slightest bit of dust will interfere with the laser.
  • Late Bid on ebay - dogbreath99605 - I'm sure you must know about Bid snipers but just in case I've used several and the one that I've stayed with is called EZ Sniper, it's a free app and has some handy tools, my favorite is EZ-Add, one click and all the auction information is added and all you need to do is enter your highest bid and how many seconds before the end of the auction you want it to start bidding, in a year I've only lost auctions that I under bid on and its nailed a lot of auctions for me.
  • writing file list to text file - Ray - Here is one way to list all of the folders and the files in them in a file that can be opened with Notepad.
To print the contents of the C drive to a file called before.txt in C, go to a Command Prompt (in WinXP go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt) and type this - "dir c:\*.* /s/one >c:\before.txt" (without the quote marks) and press Enter.
